I'm ordering a set of bare knuckle pickups for my rga, and I wanted to make sure that covered pickups will fit before ordering them. A friend installed emg's in his rga321f and he said he had to have his tech grind down the screw mounts in order for the emg's to fit the cavity correctly. Do you guys know if I will have this same problem with regular covered passive pickups? I could just get open poled, but since I was ordering bare knuckle, I figured I would get some interesting, unique looking covers....
Those pickups should definitely fit as I've seen an RGA121 with BareKnuckle PU sell on bay-E. So, unless that seller altered the guitar without mentioning it they must have fit right in.
With your friend's guitar do you mean he had to grind down where the pickups mount in the guitar? I know when I put my DiMarzio X2N into my RGA I had to do that because the pickup is fairly tall (the backing plate is the same size as the stock pickups, though) and when screwed down completely flatly to the guitar it was too high. A little dremel tooling later it was low enough. Wasn't hard to do.
I put a Gibson 57' Classic Plus covered p/u in the neck position of my RGA121 without any problems. It should be fine, you might have to do a little routing with some p/us, but its not that hard, as Johnny Two Tone stated.
