AMT Electronics Tube Guitar Series SS-20 Guitar Preamp

AMT Electronics Tube Guitar Series SS-20 Guitar Preamp

Tube powered pocket powerhouse

Review By LonePhantom
Sound: The SS-20 pedal-based preamp is an amazing little unit. It is a 2 channel preamp with separate 3 band tone controls for the clean and crunch channels. The crunch channel also has a boost for even more power. It is packed into a little chassis a bit bigger than a standard Boss pedal.

The clean channel does a lovely job of achieving that Chiming Fender amp sound, and sounds particularly beautiful with a guitar set to split coils. You can also push the gain and give your tone a little grit, much like a clean valve amp sounds when pushed hard.

Switching over to the crunch channel you will...

Reliability: AMT Electronics have certainly put a lot of effort into using quality materials with their products. The SS-20 has a nice basic metal chassis that feels nice and solid. It's not about to fall apart like a lot of plastic pedals feel.

The 12AX7 valve is protected with a vented metal cover, and it also has vents on the bottom of the pedal. AMT Electronics also saw fit to provide rubber feet so that the pedal is lifted a little off the ground to help with ventilation.

All of the dials on the SS-20 move smoothly and freely. I'd prefer a little more resistance in them, but that's my personal...

Customer Support: I haven't dealt with them personally, but they are provided gear to Jemsite for selected reviewers, so they are obviously ready to stand by their product if they are happy to provide gear like this to reviewers.

Liked about it: Great tones are so easy to dial in straight out of the box.
* Fantastic clean and crunch channels sound just like a valve amp. AMT Electronics have really taken their time to develop a hybrid tube preamp that works like the real deal.
* Built in effects loop is brilliant. You can build your pedal board neatly, using reasonable length patch cables, and then just run one lead to the return of your amp's effects loop, PA, or even computer input.

Didn't like: The pictures from AMT Electronics show the SS-20 as having knobs that look like the tips of the Soviet-era nuclear missile the preamp is named after. My unit came with regular black knobs. Not a big deal, but the idea of the warhead knobs is kind of cute in a strange way!

Vintage in your Pocket...

Sound: This preamp comes in the form of a stomp box. Although it has some features you would not expect from a little stompbox. For once it has a full featured FX-Loop. It also features a full 3-band EQ which is quite easy to use as it is not so anoyingly reactive as many other products.

Of course this somehow limits how much you sound customizing you can do, but I found this to be a good feature since it is very hard to dial in sounds that are bad. Level, Master Volume and Gain work as with any other amp and get the job done pretty well. With the use of limiting your volume with the Master...

Reliability: Comes in a solid metal enclosure that you can run over with your car. All the knobs are quite nice and firm. This unit is really really well built.

Of course as this is a test unit I had to open it up. Also internally the unit is nicely built. Everything is good and firm in its place and secured. All soldering is done very nicely and it really has a handcraftet feel to it.

Customer Support: Not dealt with them.

Liked about it: + Sounds
+ Built Quality
+ Easy to dial in
+ Beginner friendly

Didn't like: Nothing I can think of.

Monster in your pocket...

Review By Tank
Ease Of Use: This unit again is a once channel preamp layout, but I rather put it in the Distortion box section as it rather fits that description. It has a full fletched 3-band EQ which is rare for such a unit and a level and one gain knob. So usage is pretty straight forward. As it is single channel the foot switch will turn the unit on and off. Again it is quite easy to dial in as the knobs are not so overly responsive. Apart from the IN and OUT connectors the unit also features a cab sim output.

Sound: Now this unit is much more of a beast than the previously tested F1 one. The S1 has a totally different character and much different settings are needed.

Again I used a Jem and a Les Paul for testing it and first hooked it up to my trusted Carvin V3's clean channel.

The S1 one really drives is all that can be said. It can go from quite fuzzy punk rock to really really insane gain. It is however harder to dial in than the F1 and needs a good player.
This is mainly due to the positve fact that the unit delivers every slight touch straight to the output even in insane gain settings. For a...

Reliability: Built like a tank. Of course I cracked it open and everything was very nicely done. Definately a keeper.

Customer Support: No dealings with them.

Liked about it: + Sounds
+ Insane gain
+ Transports every little touch
+ Very well built

Didn't like: - Cab. Sim is not my cup of tea
Not really a minus for everyone: This unit is not for the beginner. Pro's will love it.

Best Direct recording pedal for solos!

Review By dimitar
Ease Of Use: The Calironia's EQ section makes for a great variety of tones. A little moving of Knobs make subtle distinction!

Sound: The Sound reminds me somewhat of a John Petrucci and Greg Howe sound. And the most important for me is how natural it sounds and overall frequency response. There are a lot of mid range and that's the amazing. Every time when I try to get right mix with my solos I always RESORT to some EQ's . But now that is not necessary! This great Little Box Help me now!
My Guitars fit in mix very natural and easily. And this DUE to a perfect blend of frequency colors! What is it DUE to? I dont know ! But that is not important! I forget to say that ! You don't need a CAB or speaker Simulator! There is built...

Reliability: It is strong build like a tank

Customer Support: Great suport!

Liked about it: I am impressed with my AMT California it works so well for everything from blues to metal. And mainly for me.
for crazy Soloes!
The AMT California is a nice addition to your other gear!

Metal to the Max

Review By smooth55
Ease Of Use: Very easy to get a good grinding distortion out of this pedal. Simple on/off switch with input and 2 outputs depending on if you want to record or run direct or if you're running into an amp. Works with my 9v PSA style adapter.
My most major gripe is that I'm running this in the loop of the F1 and I wish they would've put an output jack on the same side of the pedal as the input jack. As it is now, I've got a 6" cable into the input but I have to run a 18" cable back to the F1. If the jacks were on the same side, I could just use two 6" cables and then have the pedals lined up nicely on my...

Sound: I'll start by saying that I've never really played a 5150, what this pedal is supposed to model. However, running this pedal, with my JS1200, in the channel loop of the AMT F1 into my Crate 120 solid state amp gives me a pretty good idea of what I think it would be like. While the aesthetics may be simple, to say the least, it makes up for that with incredible tonal complexity. It is extremely responsive to dynamics, and can handle anything rock oriented that you'd throw at it.

This pedals is mean. It's meant to get to brutal distortion but unlike some hi-gain pedals and amps, it stays nice...

Reliability: It's a metal casing with a solid feeling foot switch. The knobs are nice and tight. It has the feel of being very robust and gig-worthy. All the connecting jacks feel particularly hefty and the pedal has good weight despite it being the size of your typical mxr pedal.

Customer Support: Haven't dealt with them but they are part of the reviewer's club. They sent me this and the F1 to demo and write a review about and then I also get to keep the pedal. That shows that they're willing to go out on a limb for their products to me. I have not dealt with them directly, but the pedals seem great.

Liked about it: 1. Raging distortions for classic to modern metal and hard rock tones in a pedal is something that isn't so easy to do. This easily gets my vote over something that Boss would put out.
2. Excellent dynamics.
3. Robust build quality and a small package that will fit on anyone's pedal board.

Didn't like: 1. The input/output jacks work if you're running the pedal in your chain but if you're trying to utilize the F1's channel loop, it's a bit cumbersome. A 1' cable may stretch under the pedals back to the return of the F1's loop on a raised board, but you'll have to either use a longer cable or turn the pedal sideways to make that set-up work otherwise.
2. Came off a bit harsh when doing solo's and melodies. I think this pedal is meant for mean riffing more than solos.

Sharpen up your sound with an AMT B1legend pre amp pedal

Review By nickcoumbe
Ease Of Use: The Legend B1 is pretty well laid out and is easy to understand. All the controls on the top are clearly labelled, although it would be nice to have the inputs and outputs more clearly labelled on the side, as it is easy to plug into the Cab Simulation output by mistake, other than that it is very straight forward.

The manual is concise but tells you everything you need to know. I found it to be extremely helpful.

As a stand alone unit the B1 is a pretty simple pre-amp in a stomp box. When connected to the Legend F1 it forms part of a 2 channel pre-amp set up. If you can use an effectl...

Sound: As this is supposed to emulate the "sharp" channel on a Bognor, don't expect a lot of warm bluesy sounds. It does add quite a bit of sustain and the sound is saturated, but it is also tight and quite edgy.

Rotating the gain to about half way gives a nice buzzy distortion that would work equally well for Heavy Metal (think Judas Priest) or Punk. With the gain up full the drive becomes thicker and more compressed sounding with a lot of clarity and sustain without getting too fizzy. The 3 band EQ helps a lot here, remembering that this is supposed to have quite a harsh sound, rolling back the...

Reliability: In terms of the external construction the B1 is very solid, with particularly sturdy switches. I don't envisage any problems with gigging with any of the AMT units I have seen so far.

Internally I think the design could have been more carefully thought out. If you go down the 9v battery route then you will notice that the battery (I was using a Duracell Plus 9v, which must be a pretty standard choice!) does not really fit into the case particularly well. In fact it can only be inserted on edge (with the terminals in line and perpendicular to the base) leaving approximately 5mm sticking out...

Customer Support: Never dealt with them, and as my unit was a review product I haven't contacted them for a replacement. It was extremely carefully packaged when it arrived though, so I suspect that they really care about their product.

Liked about it: Built like a tank (well mostly)
Probably the best tone I have heard from any overdrive/distortion pedal
The whole idea of the Legend amp system is pretty unique and is executed very well. I think that this has effectively created it's own market by solving a lot of problems in one.

Didn't like: Battery connector really cheap and not very sturdy
Quite noisy at idle.
Could have slightly better labelling on the side.
None of this would really put me off buying another, or recommending to others.

From Russia with love comes the AMT F1 Legend series pedals

Review By IbanezFreak777
Ease Of Use: At first glance you notice that even though it's a small stomp box, there seems to be a lot going on here. Extra input and output jacks then on any of your usual stomp pedals. The nice rubber black knobs give you control over EQ's like Low Mid Treble, Level, Master Volume and last but never the least of importance the Gain. The EQ's are subtle in their change to sound, some might find this a plus and others not. Considering this pedal is more about a clean sound with subtle gains the subtly of the EQ's seem to be warranted in this case.
The pedal has channel send and return to allow the...

Sound: I plugged in my very high end Ibanez J Custom Rg Paint 1 with Air Norton Dimarzio Pickups and plugged into a Mesa Nomad 100. I would have to say that the F1 has many similarities to the Mesa nomads first gain channel, which is clean but with a nice chance to add subtle gain. Don't expect this pedal alone to give you much hard rock distortion or overdrive, but at high volumes it can really cut through air. I can see how using this pedal directly into a recording device, will allow you great tone without the actual amp.

Being that this series of pedals are preamps and tube like simulation...

Reliability: The Stomp box itself looks and is very durable. The foot switch is also large which is good for big boots when on stage, and the Led is very bright and will cut through the madness of lighting and smoke on stage. It would probably survive a nuclear blast, so I reckon 30 years on stage should be a walk in the park for this pedal.

Customer Support: Didn't deal with them

Liked about it: I would have to say that my favorite part about the pedal is its subtle gains for a clean sound, its ability to have an effects loop is fantastic, and the idea of building up different channels of overdrive, via the channel effect and return feature is definitely a new way of thinking.

Didn't like: In conjunction with another AMT pedal through the channel send and return I found that the added pedal sounded slightly different to when it was used on its own. Maybe I need to spend more time tweaking it, but that kind of defeats the purpose of stomp boxes, where you should be able to plug in and away you go. I spent a bit of time tweaking knobs on both pedals during their combined workout and eventually did find some nice sounds, but it was a lot of work for not much reward.
