There's nothing wrong with shims, especially metal or maple shims. They are made to make the nut sit perfectly on the neck. Any slight imperfections in the cut might cause the strings to be too low and cause dead open notes, or too high, sharp notes on the first few frets. On the former, shims are used to compensate for that slight imperfection. Absolutely nothing wrong with them.
