Schaller problem

I put a low profile Schaller trem in a custom guitar. When I tighten the bar by screwing it down the bar doesn`t swing out of the way naturally. If I leave it loose enough where it does swing out of the way then there is an unacceptable amount of play in it and it squeaks when the bar swings. Is it really designed this poorly or is there something I`m missing here?
