What Pickup is this?

Well, I'm a big fan of Steve Vai's work. I think he is certainly one of the most accomplished and brilliant guitarists of our time, and is something of an icon.

But I was watching his amazing performance of For the Love of God, which can be found on the Steve vai youtube channel, and every time it zoomed in on his guitar, I was wondering... what the hell is that pickup he's using in the neck of the guitar? It looks nothing like his usual Evolution, Breed, or PAF Pro pups, and I've never seen one quite like it... anyone know what it is?

Thanks!

Re: What Pickup is this?

I assume the guitar's labelled Flo?

It's a Sustainer pickup.

Re: What Pickup is this?

Yes--it's a Fernandes Sustainer. That thing will sing for days...

Re: What Pickup is this?

lol, sounds like it earned its name Now that we're on the topic, I might as well get inquisitive: how exactly does it work? I heard it's battery powered... does that mean it's a specialized active pickup?

Everything you need to know :

They're very cool - I have a Jackson DK2S with a Sustainiac and it's great fun.

Re: What Pickup is this?

You can buy the set-up on the bay. I have yet to try it. I have a guitar that I am building with one extra hole. It may become a sustainer.

Re: What Pickup is this?

I almost bought a Ravelle elite w/ sustainer. Those pickups are awesome. I wonder why no other manufacturer has tried to approximate it without violating fernandes' copyright.

Re: What Pickup is this?

Sustainiac is the competitor and better for an aftermarket install, erawk. I remember seeing guitars with the Sustainiac stock in them back in the late 80's early 90's, but I don't remember the brand.
