3D Laser Scanning - Guidance Needed

I have a rather unexciting idea that could involve 3D laser scanning and would like to run it by someone who is thoroughly familiar with the technology, its limitations, associated costs, and can an opinion on the feasibility of my idea.

My idea does involve scanning a guitar, so that should give anyone interested a sense of the scope of my idea. I would like to discuss the purpose of scanning a guitar in private first though. I understand there are multiple methods used in 3D laser scanning for various applications most of which are far more demanding than scanning a guitar.

I would appreciate an help/guidance/expertise/and advice offered. If you know "a thing or two about lasers," post "I know a thing or two about lasers" and I'll send you a PM.

Firstly, I know nothing about this sort of technology, but would suggest that the correct way to reply to a message that states, "I know a thing or two about lasers" is to begin that reply with the phrase "Now listen closely, Bond"...

While not the guidance I need, you certainly are not wrong.
