Appalling beyond belief

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/7206570.stm

People are different but if that happened to me I would have absolutelly refused the hospital to call anyone and would have called the British Consulate for advice.

My mind can't comprehend the cultural differences between Europe and the US.
For all the good things you guys have you really have some appalling practices going on.
Unbelievable.

How can something like this happen in a 1st world country?

That family sounds like they have a pretty good case for litigation. I hope they are handsomely compensated for the complete disregard of their human rights.

Does this sort of thing happen often in the USA?

Truly disgusting treatment.

Re: Appalling beyond belief

Absolutely disgusting, them girls must have felt so exploited, hopefully they will be well compensated for their ordeal. Awful how something like that could happen in the US.

Re: Appalling beyond belief

Yeah, this happens all the time, it;s a hobby, don't you know?!

o_O

If you think this is routine, I'd wager I could sell you a bridge.
I am curious how this happened, but I'm also curious what provisions the girls' mother made to take care of them when she fell ill? If the system got involved, she must've had no other resources, no family to help out, or no other support system. Not to play Devil's advocate, but someone had to have called in child services and felt there was a need for assistance. The searches, etc I can't say anything about, doesn't seem good.

Someone is going to be getting a nice check down the road.

Thanks mate, you have confirmed all my suspicions.

Seriously, I'm not trying to run your country down and my enquiry was genuine.

Government policy in alot of countries (including mine) is to blame, not the people who live there, so I hope you don't take offence.

As for the provisions the mother took to look after her children, maybe you could cut her some slack, after all, she was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. There's nothing wrong with the system getting involved, but their handling of the matter was nothing short of disgusting.

Again, I wasn't trying to be an assh0le, just asking if child welfare agencies overstep their bounds often in the US, because I know that the agencies in Australia have a very bad name.

Rock on!

Re: Appalling beyond belief

Pneumonia isn't a death sentence, I'm sure she still had the means to communicate. Granted I have no idea how severe she had it, but it isn't like she was in a coma.

Terrible indeed. I hope it's an exception.

I don't think generalizing is good. When I arrived at Luton Airport, the guy at the customs line yelling "get your shoes off" at us foreigners was very disrespectful, nothing short of those "Yes, Sr. Yes Drill Sargents" from the movies. Thankfully, everyone else at your beautiful country was great.

Re: Appalling beyond belief

weird story

The minute the mother was told the kids are being taken away she should have made a trip back home. Its only a 6 hour flight.

Something fishy about this.

Red face Re: Appalling beyond belief

Hey listen, we were a 1st rate country 200 years ago but we still oppressed the Irish for being scum, and killed, abused and took advantage of the American Indian, in some cases to extinction and 150 years ago, we still were a slave country, and burned witches at the stake, and 100 years ago we still oppressed the Blacks, and Asians. During WWI, there were hate crimes perpetrated against those we thought might be our enemies, we had the great Red scare and blacklisting of Communist sympathizers even though we are a country founded on freedom, we stilled killed JFK, Malcom X, Martin Luther King JR, John Lennon. We only intermingled blacks and whites in schools 50 years ago.
England was as brutal to her Irish, Welsh, and Scottish sons and daughters, as anyone on this planet. Rape, torture, death, infanticide, the degredation of human rights for hundreds of years.
Australia treated the Aborigines worse than America treated slaves...
Romans fed Christians to the lions...
They crucified criminals...
The pagans were all but wiped out to make room for the new order of Christianity...
Wars have been fought and blood has been spilled over and over to this day in the name of freedom, God, religion. Not just in America but the world over...
South Africa and Apartheid...
Hitler tried to exterminate a race of people he felt too impure for our world...
People fly planes into buildings killing thousands of innocents because they are angry.
Michael Jackson rapes little boys and the parents accept a pay off for it.
Susan Smith killed her children for the love of a man...
Their are people out there who are turned on by bestiality and kiddie porn...
We take drugs and smoke cigarettes knowing the end is an early, and not so pleasant death...

So while this is a terrible, and degrading thing to have happened to these two young girls, and it is. I am not making light of it at all, and they should be well paid for their pain! Does this really surprise anyone that man, the most cruel of all creatures great and small, is capable of something like this? Not just in America, but anywhere there is a breathing human there will be pain and suffering...that's what we do. This doesn't excuse it or make it right. It does shed some light on what we are.
Being a 1st rate country or an impoverished 3rd world country, we are all still human, and humans feel all those bitter and resentful emotions that no other creature feels. Every country has there dirty secrets of blasphemy against itself. Welcome to the world.

And my heritage is English, Irish, and Welsh so my bloodline goes back to either killing and hating each other or doing and loving each other, which is no wonder why I'm so messed up...

Re: Appalling beyond belief

Like this is some atrocity?...... Get over it! These girls were probably more uninformed and frightened from all that was happening than "abused" or "exploited" or humiliated. Heck, they are 13 and 15 years old..... like what, you don't have gym class over there? Heck, when I was in Jr. and Sr. high school we showered after gym class! And it wasn't in privacy, we had at least 25 others in the shower along with a coach walking around making sure we weren't getting into trouble or pulling some kind of prank.

Funny we push sex and sexuality in every other facet of life, but God forbid require someone to get naked in a situation other than the privacy of their own little room and you'd think the world was ending!

As far as being strip searched.... it may be required of all the kids. Just think if they weren't searched and some other kid hurt them with a weapon that was smuggled in.... then you'd be all up on your high horses whining because there wasn't a policy of searching them.

Also, did anyone consider that their clothing was taken because they may have had lice, bed bugs, or any number of pests that could be carried in their clothing?

And what about having their pictures taken..... duh, didn't they have that done when they got their passports? Get a grip people!

Oh hell no..... you'd all rather cast stones, assume the worst, and act all appalled. Looks more like a reason to bring suit and get an easy money grab to me!

I'll bet there's more to this story too..... hmmmm, she comes down with pneumonia in a day or two? More like she made a bad decision to do international travel while sick already! The mother probably never checked what U.S. policy was if she became hospital bound or quarantined or incapacitated.

If there was any oversight here it's why the British Consulate wasn't contacted! We (the U.S.) should have done that or at least suggested it, but it was just as much the mothers responsibility too!

Just another unfortunate situation sensationalized by the press for the "sheep" to cry wolf over..... looks like it's working!

Let's face it there is far more to international travel than just getting your passport, buying tickets and hopping on the next flight!
