Back Problems

I know over the years I have seen several posts on here about people with back problems and even some who have sought surgery for it, so I thought I would try to get some advice.

I have had some degree of back pain for 10+ years due to the kind of work I have done (mainly improper lifting techniques on my part). About a year ago though I fell off a ladder and started experiencing severe lower back pain and sciatic nerve pain. The only treatment I sought was ER, where they x-rayed me to insure nothing was broken and pain meds.

Fast forward to present day, and now armed with insurance I finally started seeing my general practitioner. Long story short: An x-ray and an MRI revealed a bulging disc and stenosis (no surprise). My practitioner has set me up to see a pain management specialist and talked of me going to a specialist for surgery. My Dr didn't have any real answers for me about my options or even what treatment involves though.

My question is does anyone know what I can expect from this pain management specialist, and what the normal treatment is? Would I be better off just going down the surgery route? Do I have other options and what has worked for you?

Re: Back Problems

Lumbar stenosis is a serious thing but typically untreatable surgically. There is no medical treatment for sciatica that is not a medical emergency (fracture, etc.) other than medication and time (wait for pain to go away by it self). I'd do accupuncture for months before considering surgery. My obvious advice is to see a chiropractor for 6-8 weeks of hands on treatment ASAP (2-3x weekly, even if you lack coverage) In Florida it's important to finding a good D.C. - not an auto accident or geriatric mill - who does hands-on. They can use massage therapy and other in-office hocus pocus performed by people other than the doctor in Florida. PM me if you need more info, if you were nearby NJ i'd have you feeling well without a doubt. this comes from what will soon be almost 2 decades of hands-on clinical experience. Don't hesitate to PM me if you need more offline/confidential info. Good luck... glen
