Re: Best guitarist ever?

Frank Zappa
Zakk Wylde once said "If you don't play guitar you don't even know. He's just got so much going on."
That may be a bit of a paraphrase, because I don't remember the quote exactly, but Zakk was right regardless.
Nobody does it like Zappa. Nobody.

And didn't he have a protoge at one time that went on to be successful? What was his name? Steve Vee? Steve Vay? I can't remember...

Re: Best guitarist ever?

Im surprised that no one mentioned buckethead (AKA Brian Carroll) , I think hes a pretty talented player, Do I feel he is the best tech. player ever ? no, but he is amazing none the less, i would throw a few other names out there, george lynch, phil keaggy, django reinhardt, chris impretelli, steve morse, and lukether. But my favorites where already mentioned, vai and wylde!

Re: Best guitarist ever?

I wouldnt say anyone was the "best" ... I couldnt tag someone with that & not feeling like I was disrespecting a lot of players but if I had to pick ONE favorite at any given moment I'd most likely say Jeff Beck

Re: Best guitarist ever?

For me, 'cause I know that this is in reality a preference question (The order doesn't really matter):

1. Joe Satriani: More feeling in his playing than other guitarist
2. Paul Gilbert: Technical, but really fun and unique
3. Kiko Loureiro: Plays metal, rock, Brazilian Jazz, classical all flawlessly
4. Hendrix: Power and feeling more than any other guitarist ever
5. John Petrucci: Good metal and rock epic sounds.
6. Stevie Ray Vaughn: Makes the blues actually fun
7. Jimmy Page: Without him we wouldn't have riffs
8. Eddie Van Halen: Shred pioneer, also the founder of ultra high gain tone

and after that there are so many I like that I can't say.

Re: Best guitarist ever?

Hmmm no one said David Gilmore.. he is not fast but nobody have the same great tone and feeling like him.... he is big in the guitar world.

All of the guitarist are the greatest in the world with their own style and playing and feeling.

Even chet atkins and mark knoffler.

Re: Best guitarist ever?

I think this should be changed to say "favorite guitarist ever", cuz "best" is obviously quite subjective lol. For me, it's Andy Timmons, hands down.

Re: Best guitarist ever?

As "the best" is very subjective (and most of my favorites have already been mentioned) it's been a pretty complete list.
BUT I can't believe nobody's mentioned Brian Setzer?????

While Buckethead is technically a good player I cannot find a single song I like, even the movie score. They all seem lifeless and without any feeling at all (while still technically perfect).

I agree with Lynch, reinhardt and Lukather, all of them great guitarists in their genre, with Lukather being one that also managed to sound good when playing outside his home genre.

I have trouble with Morse. I like his old stuff and he is also technically a genius. But I saw Deep Purple with him live now 2 times and both sound wise and playing wise it sucked big time. But maybe I am just to much of a Purple Fan and compare him to much with Blackmoore, and Morse just cannot get near Blackmoore's sound. On the other hand I loved the concert of Purple with Satriani as guitarist, he added his own playstyle and feeling to the songs without totally destroying Blackmoore's composition. (Hey I think I play smoke on the water better than Morse did on the last tour and I suck hehe...)
