Man, I can't believe no one's mentioned Blues Saraceno.

If you've not heard any of his stuff, check it out. He has tone to die for.

Warren di Martini? I like several of the RATT albums. OK, I am kinda still living in 80s hair metal, music-wise.

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

For harder rock tones, I really like the sounds that Slash gets out of his gear.

I also think that Alex Lifeson has had great tone over the years.

Another name I'm surprised hasn't come up yet is Gary Moore.

There are so many great tones out there, this thread might go for ever.

Rock on!

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

I like Blues Scaracenos' tone, Slash ya great tone as well.
That solo for "Soldiers Under Command" was cool, but it couldn't smoke a pipe let alone too many hard rock players from today, eg; trivium ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrBcS8v2B0E ), shadows fall, actually there are tons and tons and tons of bands out today that are so talented it's just rediculous, it's like the 80's again for talent.
Which btw i love Shadows Fall's tone. I forgot to say, buckethead on the song Jordan is awesome, love that tone, it's so tight.

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

^^^^ I just watched the Trivium video you posted and sorry, but it sounds like so many bands you can see in most good rock bars. Great tone??? Guess this proves it's pretty subjective and opinion based.

But this would be a fitting example of great tone and diversity.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GOs7iLKaTI

It encompasses both aural texture, great note choice, complexity in composition and takes you on a short aural journey. That as opposed to the 80's formula of composition..... three chords, break, lead, bridge, and close. *yawn*

I was talking about the record as a whole. As far as solos go,
i guess I like those guys for the melodic structure they used.
They didn't sound like a bumble bee on fire going up and down the
fret board... They are NOT the most talanted guys technique
wise, I know...

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

Did anyone see the Crossroads Blues Festival that they've been playing on PBS?
I don't know what happened with Jeff Beck, but his tone was horrible. I wonder if he was using borrowed gear or didn't have time for a proper sound check. I expect nothing but the best out of Beck.

Sorry, I thought the guys from Trivium were pretty talented. That isn't their best example of ability, but I thought it was a good song. I just can't get into Govan's stuff... it's just incredibly lame to me, the guy just doesn't have a song that I like. I've seen tons of his videos on youtube, just no good songs there. I mean Satch has tons, Vai has a couple, Yngwie's done some cool stuff... Govan has what...?

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

I would say Randy Rhoads would be one of the WORST when it comes to tone.

As far as TONE goes my personal favs are:

Ty Tabor - Dogman days
Slash
Nuno
Warren Haynes
Dave Sabo / Scotty Hill - S.T.T.G. days
Govan
Derek Trucks
Jeff Loomis
Gilbert
Tom Maxwell (nothingface)
Clint Lowery in Dark New Day
Skwisgar Skwigelf / Toki Wartooth ; v )
