I agree but I give the nod to Dave on tone.

No. Filthy blues tone is brilliant. John Lee Hooker's 'tone' was fantastic as well, absolutely unmistakeable and spot on for the songs.

Eric Johnson though.... the tone king.

I think he mostly scores music for movies these days.

Errrm, anyway... Guthrie Govan and the sound of his Suhr/Cornford rig.

Most ORIGINAL tone? Holdsworth, hands down.

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

I think Billy Gibbon's had a really good tone on ZZ Top's First Album.

Yep. There's just nothing like that sound of a '59 through a cranked Plexi. I love "Brown Sugar." Great track.

A fine example of wishful thinking. It's a miracle this thread went as long as it did without wandering off in another direction. Starts out "Best tone in rock guitar", six posts later and it's about Andy's undergarments.

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

Alex Lifeson of Rush has a really good tone in my opinion.
Paul Gilbert
Steve Vai, still fanning out over For the Love of God and Tender Surrender

Re: Best Tone in Rock Guitar

Nuno, David Gilmour, Petrucci, Ty Tabor, CKY(don't really dig the band, but I like some of the tones...must be the octave fx), satch(crystal planet), Vai(Fire Garden/ Alien Love Secrets), Andy Timmons, Eric Johnson, Slash, Santana

not so much: Kirk Hammet, John Scoffield(love his playing, but that quacky tone of his is horrid)

Jeez..... Rock guitar covers quite a bit of terratory there! Everything from ROCK-a-billy to blues-ROCK to jazz-ROCK-fusion. What part don't you understand?

Anyone who thinks Dimebag had great tone..... well, you'd love my Husqvarna chain saw then!

Whoops, I forgot.... everything we thought we knew about tone was wrong! We don't own any Zachary guitars or amps!
