Thumbs up Best use for basswood?

Just thought some forum members might like to see what Basswood looks like before it's made into guitars OR firewood.
It' not the best firewood but it burns so I'll use it.

Nice straight grain is easy to split.

This one is big enough for a guitar body or two.

That's interesting... really seems to have such a simple grain structure. Dull almost! Wonder what grade Ibanez uses underneath all the paint - is it still US basswood that's the desirable one?

Re: Best use for basswood?

American Basswood tends to have more figuring, but I don't think there's any structural advantages over other variants.....Lime or Linden

It's a bit different now....I have a new fretboard for it that is vastly different from the rosewood with dots above

Re: Best use for basswood?

indeed, in the hands of a talanted luthier, it could make a good guitar.

though i'm indeed a luthier, i usually use the scraps of what i don't use for a number of things. one time i even made a few pics (not recomended) and another time, i made a statue.

Re: Best use for basswood?

Personally I'd rather use it as firewood. Not a huge fan of it really.

Apart from not being completely in love with tone it dents really easily. I am refinishing an old 560/565 with a koa laminate and I have dinged it a couple of times

So does my oiled mahogany rga 32. I guess both mahogany and basswood are quite soft.
