Business ethics topic..ideas?

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do a 5 minute presentation on dealing with business ethics...any interesting topic from 1970 to present day.

Some examples the professor used, (although we can't use) are such as...

1) Ford Motor company knowing that the Ford Pinto had a gas tank problem where the car would usually explode into flames if a rear impact occured. Ford decided to take their chances on wrongful death suits, rather than recall the cars.

2) The smoking far is too far. Such as some local companies have said that not only can't you smoke at work, but you can't smoke at all...or you're fired, since it raises health care costs for all employees.

Again.... these are 2 topics I can't use, as the teacher used them as example....

But can you think of any topics equally interesting and controversial???

What topic would you find interesting if you were the audience?

Any help or ideas much appreciated.

You could take some ideas from the Billy Madison movie.

how about Haliburton? Enron?

Re: Business ethics topic..ideas?

you could bring up say Behringer who has for years basically just ripped other companys products off and resold them.. Thats pretty shady..

You could also talk about the Record industry trying to sue everyone and anybody from tabs to lyrics, to wanting cover bands to pay a fee to play someone elses song. Etc there ethics are revolting. I could understand the MP3 battle but the rest is just insane.

Re: Business ethics topic..ideas?

Corportate liability always throws up some interesting scenarios.
slightly different area but still some overlap to the kind of stuff that you were talking about with your first example..

for example the board of directors is legal responsible for the actions of the company. But to what extent can they be held responsible (for the sake of your presentation both legally and morally) for individual acts, done in the line of everyday business of which they had no specific knowledge..

For example the case i vaguely remember from college (R v Tesco) where the supermarket sold 18 certificate movies to underage children. The directors had no specific knowlege of the transaction, neither did the specific store manager if i remember correctly, where does blame lie morally or legally..?

You might want to talk about globalization...basically, the trend of businesses moving to places where there are less tariffs, less legal regulation, and lower minimum wages so that they can decrease their bottom dollar....

and totally destroy a poorer population, including their environment.

Some say that Nike, Bodyshop have done that sort of thing.

Or look at James Hardie industries, an Australian company which realised that they were likely to be facing high liabilities from ex-employees and users of their Asbestos based products here in Australia, so instead of accepting their responsibilities, they chose to move the corporate base of the entire company from Australia to Holland, issue some form of limited bond which would cover the asbestos related liabilities, but which could be cancelled within a year of issue by the board of directors.

Scum, there is just no other way to describe them.

Re: Business ethics topic..ideas?

How about pharmaceutical (sic!) companies testing potentially life-saving drugs on patients with cancers, etc. and the usage of a placebo? Of course, the placebo is the "control" group, which is scientifically correct, but that group misses out on treatment- for instance, cancer patients during the, say, 6-month trial of the drug cannot have their chemo or radiation, just a drug... that turns out to be a sugar pill. 6 months is plenty of time for (a) and existing cancer to get worse or (b) conventional treatments to have a significant amount of success. Of course, the test subjects consent to this risk, but is it ethical for companies to present a situation like this to patients? I've always found that situation to be very sticky ethically.

I'd say 'people picking on each other at work' would be a topic I'd be interested in seeing a presentation about.

The examples mentioned are good, esp. the James Hardie industries thing. On a positive note, the CEO of Malden Mills (maker of Polartec fleece and other fabrics) kept all of his employees on the payroll while the factory was remodeled after a fire.

Re: Business ethics topic..ideas?

hmm, thought that Ford balanced the cost of modifications against the cost of potential lawsuits on the Pinto issue.... could be wrong.

but why not start from the base upward...

money = power... power = money and then more and more money.

ethics are a small issue that will only impact a companies (or corporations) ability to make money when they earn a bad reputation for being ethically bad. this is of little or no consequence to most businessmen who will spend a minimum amount of money convincing the general public that they love furry animals and that they really are concerned about their customers - when they assess that they could possibly lose a large enough percentage of them to impact upon profit.

business ethics = money
the balance is money vs current customers vs future customers .... etc

How about Ibanez charging too much for JEM's

Or....more seriously if you want, Ibanez starting out being a cheap copy company originally to fund a bigger, brighter future in the long run??
