Cant play. :(

I have not ever had this happen before but I picked up my guitar to play last night and cant get my ring finger to cooperate at all and its too weak to even bend a string.

I went on a 131 Mile bicycle ride this weekend and I think my hand is weak from grabbing the handlebars for over 12 hours over 2 days. About 65miles a day.

I think my hand is just cramping because it was twitching last night.

Just an odd feeling not being able to play. It better strengthen fast, I want to do the challenge this month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exclamation Re: Cant play. :(

Hi,

Off road/trick bicycle and guitar are not compatible. A 3 decade friend of mine was a phenomenon on the BMX when we were in high school, but he had to quit because of the continuous strain on his wrists didn't allow him to play guitar. He quit the BMX in order to play guitar.

Regards,

JP

Re: Cant play. :(

I get this + all the time. Sometimes my fingers sometimes my wrist and sometimes my arm or the whole lot.
Its all wear and tear related with my job which is very heavy duty .
It will only get worse with me so I've learned to live with it and not get too pissed off.

Re: Cant play. :(

Agreeing with Zoot.

Another way would be to find balance between biking and guitarplaying.

For me it is often the same. I'm practising guitar for weeks and speed up my technic. Then I've got to much other work to do and a few days later i can start at "zero" again.

And this is something really real:

To be a good guitarplayer you NEED to practise every day for hours!

Re: Cant play. :(

You basically have temporary nerve damage. It's what happens from pressing a lot of weight on that nerve for a long period of time. It should go away, but it might take a week or two.

It will but it will always come back at some stage.

Re: Cant play. :(

Thanks guys.

Zoot, besides building great guitars, what do you do that your arm goes???

J, thanks, I figured it was a fatigue or something. Do I rest it or play and build back up?

I have not been in the saddle for that long 2 days in a row. Preparing for a 650 mile North Dakota ride in early July. Unless the challenge happens early July, July does not look good.

Something I am willing to deal with though. Love cycling.

I work in Landscape design and construction but I actually go out and build my own design projects with a small team . Its absolute donkey work but I love it ... neck gone, back gone, foot tendinitis, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands fooked but nothing stops me from going out and getting stuck in. I used to box when I was younger and that's left a few problems.
Never felt better modern drugs and acupuncture are wonderful

Re: Cant play. :(

I would look into some special gloves and possibly some different handlebars that don't put so much weight on your hands there.

I don't think there's any harm in trying to play through it. The nerves will repair themselves in time.

LMAO I didn't mean to.

Isn't that what happened to Mustaine? He cut the circulation off sleeping with his arm over a chair?

Or so he claims. I never believe anything that guy says. Might have just been a convenient excuse to dissolve the band.

I slept too near the edge of the mattress and had the band that's around the egde digging into my arm. I can definitely feel some tingling in my fingers. I can play through it, but I need to reduce my speed.

Re: Cant play. :(

True.

I tuck my arm underneath my head when I sleep and wake up with my pinky and ring finger numb sometimes, usually goes away pretty quick though. I am still not 100% from riding. Tried to play last night, accuracy is off.

Re: Cant play. :(

I have a spinal condition that affects the strength in my hands a lot so I know how you feel. Its very frustrating being able to play very well sometimes to garbage the next day.
