Classifieds... or lack of

Mods the site seems to be exceptionally slow / dying in the classified section.
I find this a bit sad.

I remember 5 years ago I'd have to be scrolling through pages on the JEM section to find the guitar I saw a couple of days ago.

Now I visit back here once a month or so to find about 5 threads have been updated. Hardly anything new is being listed at all from one week to another.

Is there no room to relax certain rules that seem a bit counter intuitive to selling?

The 30 day rule between bumps makes it incredibly hard to work out who actually has what and are actively looking to sell it. Would something like 3 not be a bit more pragmatic for enticing people into the forums to sell gear without causing any detriment?

Re: Classifieds... or lack of

The whole site has slowed down - I don't have hard numbers to put on it, but there just aren't as many active members as there used to be.

A lot of it is just evolution - this used to be both one of the few good web forums for someone interested in Ibanez guitars in general, anyone interested in Steve Vai, and one of the few good web forums for seven string or extended range guitars. These days Ibanez has their own forum (or did), Vai launched his own forum, and back in '04 or so a bunch of the seven string players split for sevenstring.org, and then a lot of that crew eventually left for metalguitarist.org after we sold that site. There are just a lot more forum options out there, and a lot of oldschool guys have moved on to new forums where they have more shared interests with the community.

This also makes it harder to sell. When an ad is a month old with no change in price, I expect it to be gone and the seller forgot about the ad. There are many other sites that offer better visibility for the same cost (for free), people post where they can expect their stuff to sell.

OP and I have a group on fb for buying and selling gear with thousands of members. We relaxed bunping from 48 hours to 24 and moticed an increase in transaction volume. Mayne we can all have a vote on bumping rules?

Is bumping every 24 hours really desirable? All that does is allow the constant bumpers to always be at the top. Just as valid an add not being bumped sinks lower and lower. So what's the point of constant bumping? You can change terms, add pictures, make price changes at will and these are not bumps, and show an active add without a cursory "BUMP". There are plenty of creative ways to bump an add without being annoying to constantly bump making sure you stay on top.

Re: Classifieds... or lack of

Check out sites like TGP, RT, MLP and SSO. Literally every other forum allows 24 hour bumps. Nobody really ends up bumping every 24 hours anyways, they end up doing it every 2-3 days. Right now it makes the site look deader than it is.

At least it would save me having to write "21 days between bumps as per Classified Ad rules" a thousand times. But who would I get to ban then...?

No matter what the rules are there will always be many that ignore them

Thats the other thing, 21 days is such a weird number, nobody really wants to sit down and figure out when its been 21 days

Even when we changed from 48 hours to 24 hours we noticed we could pretty much stop having to remind people about bump rules.

Kids have computers and iphones to play around on now a days. They don't need no stinking guitars (or guitar forums).

It might pick up if we had a separate Guitar Hero section.

I think the other thing is that the mods don't have too much say over the technical aspects of the site, we just try to keep things running as smoothly as possible. I'm sure that we'd all like to see the site busier, but to compromise on the quality of the site just to get quantity of traffic has not, over the last 20 or so years, been of prime importance here.

+1
Not really about the classifieds.
The thing that keeps me coming back here is the quality of the site and people on the site. I see a lot of forums out there with tons of traffic and mods who are beyond swamped, as a result you see more trashy aspects of net behaviour and the sites become unattractive . I just feel the balance is right here. Summers are quiet on the web - vacation time and better weather contributes, come november when it's pissing rain and hail this place will be a lot more active.

21 days is three weeks, dude. It's simple. "When did I post this thread? On a Tuesday. Have three Tuesdays gone past since then? If not, I shouldn't bump."

I don't think the classified section is really the focus of this site, to be fair...
