Computer gurus: please help

I'm trying to use Limewire through my school LAN. The browser proxy settings are 10.0.10.3, port 8080. The SOCKS port is 1080 (and I knw it works because it comes out OK in the MSN Messenger tests)

I configure Limewire for both types of proxies but it just won't connect to the Gnutella network.

Am I doing anything wrong?

I've tried HTTP tunelling and "socksifying" and nothing at all.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Nope, nothing of the sort. Neither on the LAN nor on my computer. However, Limewire does detect a firewall, which is strange

Re: Computer gurus: please help

Yes it probably would, and I suspect Limewire is the kind of thing they would exclude. I expect that it would be a hardware based firewall rather than a windows one, so sidle up to the network admin, and use your considerable charm. I assume that you have buckets of this as you are a memeber of Jemsite.

What follows is the comment to this thread from a friend of mine who is a guru of all things techy:

"You're on the money. Limewire, Bittorrent, etc. have their ports blocked by
most big businesses or academic institutions - basically, any place that can
afford a server admin team and would rather not have entertainers knocking
on their door asking for royalties."

Yes, they would. Most campuses now block filesharing programs as well due to federal laws and ****.

Re: Computer gurus: please help

Try consulting the limewire help/forums to see if there's a workaround around a firewall

lime wire sucks i could never get it to work good!!! go to www.bearshare.com download the free version you wont be disapointed.........download it ,,then run adware 6, by lavasoft(free shareware on line) it will take out the spyware,, then when bear share ask you if you want to up grade, click no and just use the version you got!!!

Re: Computer gurus: please help

I don't use limewire either. bearshare seems decent, I don't have much experience with it, Ares is good but DC++ is the bomb!

Re: Computer gurus: please help

What's bugging me is that, for P2P apps that can be configured to run through an HTTP proxy (like LimeWire), there should be no proble, right?

Uploads and downloads would just go through the HTTP port, or am I way off?
