Exploding head syndrome

I finally found an explanation of a rare condition I suffer from. Does anyone else here have Exploding head syndrome!!? This first affected me about 20 years ago and it still happens occasionally. It's pretty scary at the time it happens, which is usually shortly after I fall to sleep, or while I'm falling asleep. The noise can sometimes be like an explosion but it varies. First time I had this it was like an orchestral stab on a keyboard. To describe it, it's like you have headphones on, and all of a sudden you put your amp volume all the way up. It only lasts for a second, but it's pretty damn scary and deafeningly loud.

Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome

Re: Exploding head syndrome

I never knew there was an actual term for it until today.

LOL @ JEMMER. You might be right, though!

My girlfriend has a strange syndrome, too. When she gets upset and cries, her head makes an extremely high pitched whistling noise! It's so weird. If I put my ear to her head I can hear it! She says she has also had Exploding Head Syndrome. It only happened once, I think.

Re: Exploding head syndrome

I've experienced this at least a dozen times. It usually occurs just before I fall asleep. Sometimes it happens after I've been asleep for an hour or 2; just before I hit the deep "REM" sleep period. The sound that goes off inside my head when it occurs is nearly identical to the loud reverberating noise that you hear between scenes on the TV show "Law and Order". It seems to be about as loud as an air horn on an 18 wheel tractor trailer rig.

It scares the crap out of you when it happens, but after a few seconds you realize what just occured and then fall back asleep.

Re: Exploding head syndrome

A few times the sound was similar to a long ruler or stick being slapped on a desk. Sort of like firing a .22 caliber rifle inside an indoor range.

Re: Exploding head syndrome

I've had that all my life, I thought I was the only one lol.

It happens like the others said, when I'm just falling asleep although it's not all ways an 'explosion', I hear wood crashing and screaming or yelling. It' freaks me out to the max until I realize I just imagined it.
