Re: First picture with my new Nikon D40

kit lens? what f-stop? nice shot but now you need some good glass. the background blur is distracting with what looks like a 5/7?blade aperture (maybe it's jpg artifacting from downrezzing) ...glen

I don't mind the bokeh (background blur). It is a little rough but it looks okay to me. Sometimes when you sharpen an image you can ruin the bokeh. You might want to try selective sharpening.
I've heard the Nikon kit lens is pretty sharp. Probably more than enough lens for your average consumer.

The background blur created by using a wide aparture is something that I love. I've recently taken SLR photography into the digital age also. I bought a Canon EOS 5D and I'm loving the creativity again that I missed when I was using my compact digital all the time.

5D is a nice camera. The way it handles high ISO noise is amazing.

I bought the 24-105 L series with image stabiliser and the 100-400 L series with image stabiliser. I'm thinking of maybe getting a macro lens and maybe something a little wider than 24 aswell. Over the weekend I came up against something where I could well have done with something wider.

It's quite pleasing. In low light conditions I've put the ISO up a touch and there was no more noise/grain than you'd get with film.

24-105L is a popular lens it seems.... too slow for my needs but great IQ and range. i long to use my 28-70L/2.8 & 35L/1.4 with a 5D... maybe later this year or early next.

wide there are few options... 14L ($$$$$)... 16-35L ($$$$ and large)... 20/f2.8 (blah 4mm wider and mediocre glass) but for outdoor use i think the 17-40L/f4 is the best bang for the buck... i've used that on a friends 20D body and i've been looking for a used one myself but have held that $ aside for my next dSLR body.

the high ISO performance is mind-boggling from shots i've seen... even without any noise-reduction in photoshop. you can shot ISO1600 and not need to run noise-ninja... glen

Re: First picture with my new Nikon D40

Yes the 16-35L that you mention is something I'm considering. I've also got a 50mm 1.4 lens which I've had for some time, not an L series, but still a good lens.
