Free Linux?

I have a laptop (IBM T42) I don't need anymore for work, but can keep until next June, so I want to do something different with it and go Linux/UNIX. I was going t go with Solaris 10, because that's what I used to use back in the day, but I'd like to hear what else all of you are using.

I only have a few needs:
FREE download or cheap DVDs
browser
Office Software

yeah, that's all my needs rifght there, pretty simple.

So what is everyone running on the Linux side?

Thanks in advance

Re: Free Linux?

Free windows 7 RC would be good. the release candidate expires June 2010 & runs great on older PCs. less of a waste of time too really .. glen

Re: Free Linux?

I'd install Ubuntu on it. I've been having too many issues getting 7RC to work on a P4 machine with 2gb of ram.

Re: Free Linux?

I hadn't thought of Win7, but I was looking forward to playing with UNIX again, to see if I can't knock some of the rust off

Re: Free Linux?

OK, downloaded Ubuntu and will burn a DVD later. Is the Office suite included in the install, or do I need to grab that after I install the OS?

Re: Free Linux?

Open Office is included on install. I haven't used the latest version that was just released, but I think you'll be happy.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 and Kubunto 8.10 with great results.

I would definitely suggest the latest version of Ubuntu.

Re: Free Linux?

9.04 appears to be the version of the ISO image. Today's our 15th anniversary, so I'm probably (definitely LOL) going to make margaritas and forget the Linux until tomorrow, but I'll post from that box as soon as I can

Margaritas = +1

Hell, I'm gonna make one, too!

Go for the 9.04 install, if you have any questions, PM me.

Re: Free Linux?

If you're into studio recording type stuff, try Ubuntu Studio, it's quite fun

Re: Free Linux?

I've had issues with Wifi and Ubuntu. Fedora seems to have that down better.

Re: Free Linux?

Sorry to hijack the tread, but....

I'm keen to give Linux a go on my laptop, mainly just for a portable web browser, so, which version is best for a newb?

Rock on!
