Going to Nashville near Vanderbilt University: Any recomendations?

Well I'll be in Nashville near Vanderbilt University for a few days. I plan on going to the Grand Ole Opry, Parthenon, and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Is there anywhere else I should go while I'm there? Always interested getting advice from the locals (or those who have been there) on good food and places to go. Thanks!

I was there a few months ago, and I went to the Gibson showcase. It was ridiculously overpriced.

Re: Going to Nashville near Vanderbilt University: Any recomendations?

I used to live there....Trying to go back for residency at Vandy.....

Depends on what you want to do. Do you like outdoors? Go down the Nachas Trace (sp?) highway. For Biking there is a great 18 mile paved loop through Edmond Warner Park with several very steep hillls (one is called "3 mile hill"...has great views.

The parthenon has a museum in the basement and a statue of Athena (full size). A trip to the Gibson factory is cool (since you play guitar). You should see the Opryland Hotel if you have never been there...it is one of the largest in the world ..so large it has its own river complete with a river boat INSIDE the hotel. If you like historical stuff, you should drive to Franklin which is now basically a suburb of Nashville where one of the largest battles of the cival war took place and has the second largest cival war cementary....look for the Carter House near downtown Franklin. For music, the Wooten Bros used to (not sure if they still do) play regularly at 23rd and Linsey. During the summer, they used to have a 1$ concert near 2nd Ave by the river I saw BB King, Eric Johnson, Collective Soul, Marcy Playground, Soul Asylum, Goo Goo dolls, and more than I can remember there...not sure if they still have that though. There is more near 2nd but most is tourist trap stuff...alot is similar to other cities (Hard Rock etc). The Wild Horse is famous for those who like country as is the Blue Bird Cafe which is on 21st in Green Hills (21st runs right next to Vandy...called Hillsboro Rd South of I-440.)....the blue bird is where a couple of movies have been shot but is mainly "singer songwriter" type stuff

It is also usually a good place to pick up music equipement for a good price...Especially used stuff...so you should check out some of the stores.

For eating...there is a great Pizza place called De Vinci's Pizza near 17th and Hayes...all toppings and crust homemade and very distinct taste. For the "college" expereince, you can go to San Antonio Taco Co. accross 21st from Vandy...Also Cheeseburger Charlie is next to it and is a good hamburger but better shakes. There is also a great Greek place at Metro Center...it is cheap but one of the best I have had (not near Vandy though). Down 21st in Hillsboro Village is a really good bread place (cannot think of the name).

Cross over Broadway/West end (one frustrating thing is that all roads have several names depending on where you are sometimes)...and go to Elliston St..there are several restraunts and small clubs including the Exit IN which is sort of famous locally....Also for Music I have heard that the Cannery is back open..it used to be more of a hard rock kind of club.

All I can think of off the top of my head...>Why will you be there...interview for college?

Whoa! Thanks Jimmi! Always like to visit the local stuff! And I'm always looking for a good burger, taco (keep your mind out of the gutter Elcid! ), pizza,...any good food!

Love history so I'll see if I can find Franklin on the map and get there. The music scene will be cool to visit too. I'll have to check out some of them.

Just going for a vacation. I'm all done with college for now. I plan to visit Vanderbilt just to see though. Thanks again Jimmi!

Thank man! Would be real cool to meet; however, I'm not sure if it will work out. We're going mainly to visit her friend and friend's husband. She's been looking forward for us to see them for a LOOONNNG time.

BUT...who knows what will happen? The husband of her friend has to work so the women may enjoy some "girl talk" alone if I were to leave? The plans are not set in stone yet so I'll let ya know!
