Guitar damage during shipping, how to handle insurance?

How do insurance claims work on shipping guitars that are damaged? If the guitar is damaged, but not unusable (lets say headstock broke), how does the amount you insured it for work?

500$ insured, head stock breaks cleanly during shipping, do you get the 500$ or the amount to fix it back?

ive gotten nothing so far for the 2 bodies damaged during shipping.

i think insurance is more for a lost package t.b.o.

the package itself has to show signs of horrible abuse. so pack it tight and in 3 serta mattresses.

The claims I have had with both UPS and FedEx ground are for the amount of insurance taken out.

The last one was a guitar body that was damaged in shipping, and insured for $400. The buyer contacted me, and I had FedEx ground pickup the body from the buyers house for inspection.

A week later I had both the dinged body and a check for $400+ the cost to ship (already refunded buyer).

In all cases I received back the damaged item and a check.
