Has my iPod died?

I heard some kind of 'spike' through the speakers and ever sincem my iPod won't play music. To look at the iPod, everything seems normal, what's displayed on the screen is fine and the hard disk sounds as it usually does.

Is my iPod totally fried now? Damn, it's a lovely iPod video, 80gb, had it 4 years and there was loads of space left.

You really need to speak to apple i think. If you bought an extended warranty, you may be able to have this fixed or replaced for free, other then that, your screwed.. :P

I never buy breakdown insurance. Maybe I could see about getting it fixed, depending on cost.

Re: Has my iPod died?

Is the sound not coming out or is the iPod not playing music as in you click stuff but it wont recognize it.

If theres no sound then the headphone jack is fried.
If its just not playing music than a soft reset should knock that out.

Soft Reset:
Hold the menu and center buttons til the apple logo appears.

If that doesnt solve it then you need a hard reset which means you need to crack that sumbitch open. Ive done it and its fairly easy. But if you dont feel comfortable opening it then i wont go on haha

I'll have a look and give it a go. That iPod has fond memories.

Re: Has my iPod died?

Hard Reset:
You open it up, unplug the hard drive and plug it back in. Then format it through iTunes. If that doesnt work then the problem most definitely is hardware failure.

I was writing my response as you were writing yours about the soft reset so i didnt actually see it til after i posted sorry.

Re: Has my iPod died?

Or run a diagnostic and see whats up. To do that:
Do the soft reset and as the Apple logo appears hold the menu and back buttons.

If all else fails you can either:
1. Get a third party to fix it. Apple repairs are expensive!
2. Just use it in Hard Disk mode or as a media player for your car, gaming system, or PC.
3. Use it as a $200 doorstop

Third party repairs would be cheaper than getting a new one.
