Re: Help with Windows problem (not burning CDs)

yeah, my computer is a HP pavilion a720n from late 2005, it has a dvd writer shared with a normal cd writer drive and the standard cd-rom drive, I was able to burn cds and dvds when I got it up to the point where I installed these programs windows media 11, intermedia dvd creator and dvd lab pro, after that I could not burn anything, since it said I needed to hookup a burning device.
?

I think you may have to re-install the drivers then, go on HP's website or you may be able to do it via the add hardware wizard.

Re: Help with Windows problem (not burning CDs)

did it work before? if so...

turn off the PC and unplug the drive (two cords - one 4 prong power and one the IDE connector)

then power back on (no drive)

then shutdown and plug the drive back in... upon boot that might recognize the drive.

last resort is google the drive and update the firmware... you could also always try burning with nero to see if it's a software issue... glen

Re: Help with Windows problem (not burning CDs)

I think before unplugging and all that it may make sense to see if the drive is being recognized upon pc start, it should show up as part of the DOS window when you start your PC. If you know how to get into your PC's Bios you can also check there. If it doesn't show up there check if all wires are con nected, to the drive as well as the motherboard. If it still doesn't show you can see if you can connect it to a different IDE port (you should have 2). I assume its a normal IDE drive? If it still doesn't show its most likely the drive itself. Also have a look if it still shows under the drives within windows. If it does and works fine there its most likely the software you burn with, if it doesn't and all wires are good its most likely the drive.

I'd have to be extremely desperate to go to a tech. Theres no problem a tech can fix that you cant.

If the drive shows up in the hardware manager in control panal, then its definately software, all the components of media player are plugins and most come with nero. Nero comes with all the MP plugins and codecs and when I have a problem like this reinstalling nero or another plugin pack will fix it.

Just keep crossing all these suggestions off your list and if all fails, THEN go to a tech.

Re: Help with Windows problem (not burning CDs)

About the wiring, the burner came with the pc, so I think the wires are connected and haven't moved on its own, the computer does recognize I have a burner, but sometimes it shows it as CD Drive, only Windows refuses to recognize I have a burner, im guessing WMP 11 did something to it, as I could burn stuff with WMP 10.

EDIT:
I just burned some CDs with Sonic Record Now, seems WMP 11 is the problem, but, whenever I use the CD Burning Wizard to burn files straight from the folder, it won't recognize my blank CDs either....wierd...at least I can use Record Now and finally listen to some new music in my car....

WMP 11 is pure cr*p on Vista there is no plugin for other browser to view embedded Windows Media. Nice going Microsoft.

Re: Help with Windows problem (not burning CDs)

When I first got MP11 it was great and shortly after I started realizing that you couldnt do anything without the plugins (which you have to pay for) but listen to music.

When you try something you dont have a plugin for, it should give you a link to their page with all the plugins and you can pay and download them from there.

So burning music with WMP 11 is a pay for only setting now?
