Question Import Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

I have recently ordered 2 replacement blue knobs for my BFP from Rich Harris which arrived safely but I was charged nearly £12 import tax by customs.I wouldn't mind so much but the knobs were only £25.Where do the customs get their figures from and do you think that it is fair. Not so long ago I got an DY Jem from **** from someone in the U.S and the customs then charged me nearly £130.Is it just the U.K or does this happen everywhere.Help!

Re: Inport Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

It happens in a lot of countries...

When i got my UVMC for $ 2300,- i got a bill to pay more than € 600,- tax.

That's why the prices of all those JEM's are so expensive here. It's cheaper to buy a ticket and fly to the US and buy a semi new Ibanez there, that to buy a new Ibanez JEM here in the Netherlands.

Still.. sorry to hear that. Ridiculous prices..

Re: Inport Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

a lot of it is admin charges, did you read the breakdown of charges ?
it depends on who is the courier in blighty, parcel force are expensive and the post office charges are not quite so bad.
when I get stuff delivered by DHL there is no admin charge but the bill does arrive several months after the delivery

DHL, i'm sure that DHL try it on, I ordered some tuners from the USA, they were only about £23 and when the invoice came from DHL, as you say months later, it was £12 duty etc..., I rang and asked them to explain and basically as Stewmac, the supplier, hadn't included postage costs on the declaration they just made it up. In the end they waived all charges.

Think this happens all the time. Some things a lot more expensive that I expect to pay duty on get through, other you get scre$£d. Parcel Force fees were £30 with duties of about £20, seems excessive. They do take advantage sometimes but I think so far I'm still better off getting thinks from the US then the UK, especially when some sellers charge 10 times the real cost of postage to make more profit.

Re: Inport Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

There are original BFP knobs for sale in the UK? News to me.

24% is combined VAT and duty but it's the junk fees that would be a blip on a big purchase that really get amplified on the small ones. Most of the time these small ones just mail right through so basically, your luck ran out.

Re: Inport Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

Doh! Not original obviously. But blue? Try Max Cottam (UK). A blue knob is a blue knob.

Re: Import Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, they should only tax you on items with a declared value of $70 or over.

I have ordered a few pickups from america at about $60-$100 a time, and never been taxed by them.

You could always have the item marked as a gift.

Re: Import Tax!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of my international friends strike bargains with us. We get them a gift and they get us a gift and then we just send them. I've gotten some really neat imported CDs, a pipe for Chris, candle holders, sculpture, foods, etc. Our friend Ron bought a guitar on Eslave and had them send it to our house and we then shipped it to him. It was actually much cheaper than for him to just buy it in the Netherlands. Weird huh! But yeah... you gotta have friends who are willing to help you out there.
