Installing programs other than C: Drive?

Hi There,

I'm very curious if it's possible to install other programs on my other Hard Drive on my computer? I have two hard drives in my laptop. It's meant to have a 100gb HD, but after checking the storage capacity it appears the 2 HD's total up to 80gb! One is 30gb (C: drive) and the other is 50gb (D: drive)

Currently the Main disk drive for installing programs and what XP runs off is the C:/ Drive, which is the smaller hard drive out of the two, and I am running out of room quickly. I'm just wondering if it's possible in the future when my C:/ drive is full (which would be probably soon =/ ), I could revert to the D: drive to install and run programs off?

I hope you can help! Many thanks

Regards

Re: Installing programs other than C: Drive?

You can install an application to any place you like, be it C: or D: or whatever. Some applications will need to write to the windows and windows \system and \system32 directories though, so the entire footprint of the app will likely be split to some degree. But you can certainly install an app nearly anywhere you want. I would creat an \apps directory of some sort on your second drive, and install the apps there so they don't end up cluttering the root.

Re: Installing programs other than C: Drive?

Hi Jim777,

Thanks for your quick reply and help. So In order to install more programs onto the second hard drive I would need to create an application directory? Does this mean just creating a new folder and calling it my Program Files folder where I can install the applications or does it mean duplicating other file types to the second hard drive so applications would be able to run?

I'm sorry if that sounds confusing. But by the sounds of things, it seems like I can just specify my second hard drive for future programs without running into problems?

Regards

Re: Installing programs other than C: Drive?

Yeah, just make a specific file on the other drive similar to the "Program Files". Then, when you are installing a program, choose the new drive (D:/) as its destination.
