I'm in a unique position at my current company. I work as an asst. manager for a large refrigeration, hvac wholesaler. I've been in the same field since 1983 with 2 different firms. I'm an inside sales / design / technical specialist. My office is in our Baltimore regional HQ. In a nutshell, I run the day to day operations behind the counter, while my immediate supervisor, the branch manager, handles the infrastructure, stock orders, shipping and receiving.
My salary is higer than 90% of the 37 store managers, yet I don't have the headaches of dealing with the regional manager whose ear is constantly being chewed on by the adninistration at our HQ. My boss is the best guy I've ever worked for. I get 17 days of paid vacation plus 5 sick days per year. He lets me have first pick of days on the calendar and will allow 2 days off with only 24 hours notice. If an appointment or family emergency arrises, our missed time is almost never charged and we receive a full days pay.
On top of all of the benefits, it's not uncommon to pull in $100 in tips from appreciative customers whose orders are delivered to the docks, ready for weekend jobs. We work in climate controlled offices, while our customers are working twice if not 3 times as hard, in hot, greasy kitchens, hellishly hot attics, dirty crawlspaces and muddy construction sites.
It's a detail intensive job and the orders must be ready when specified or your customers will find another supplier who can deliver results.
With all of the perks and opportunities for advancement in a business such as mine, why is it so difficult to find qualified, conscientious, hard working people? The veterans who come over from competitors are mostly lazy and unfriendly. Most of the younger new hires from out of school are unwilling to learn. They start in the warehouse to learn the equipment and parts, but tire of the work an labor involved as a beginner. When they are brought in to work the counter and wait on customers, they project their bad attitudes towards customers who they percieve as someone who is making them "go out of their way". They don't get it that the main point of our company's existence and growth is driven by our customer's needs and how well we perform for them when compared with our numerous competitors.
If any jemsiters in the MD, DC or eastern VA area are looking for a job with great benefits and above average pay, we're hiring. We cover all of MD, DC and VA from Roanoke east to Norfolk and all of Northern VA.

What the heck am I doing, sitting here posting in a work related thread? I took a vacation day today. I think I'm gonna put in for an hour of OT because I thought about work on my day off!
