On the job RANT!

just need to vent.

let me just say this...i'm glad i have a job, grateful i have a job, it's hard to find jobs, i don't take it for granted, etc etc etc........

keeping that in mind....

i work in 2nd level pc support in chicago, downtown. Been in IT field for 10 years! i'm 34. I have worked with large companies from US Robotics to 3Com to others and now downtown working for database management firms with clients of pepsi, kellogg's, keebler, etc.

i have been here 3.5 years. nothing but good email here and there and my users love me and they are all very cool to work with, along with the rest of my team. i am not making a lot of money, infact, below industry standard. well 2 new "techs" came aboard in the last 2 months...one is making 10k more than me and the other, 12k!!! they have no degrees at all. granted, i'm not MCSE but i put in my dues here and know all the proprietery stuff. the one chick who has been here for 2 months is still following me around asking me about stuff from computer 101; how to change out hard drives!!!!!!!!!

WHAT!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

the one was complaining he had to take a paycut from his last job for this job. he was complaining on the $$ he makes now. that is how i found out i'm making 10k less than starting salary!!!!

to go to my new boss could be bad since she reports to a B*@&#!!! at corporate. i have been looking for something else and hopefully something will come along soon. i love it here but this is insane. i have dealt with so many BS issues here and this is it for me.

i long for the day when my video / photo biz is self-supporting and i can live on just that. it will take time to get it out there more.

sorry for the rant, i feel maybe a little better.

Steve

Re: On the job RANT!

Go to your boss and explain that you are aware of the huge differences in salary and if yours is not brought into line with the other guys then you'll be forced to look for other employment.

If they value you then you'll be fine and your salary will be raised. If not then who wants to work for a company that doesn't value them anyway ?

Re: On the job RANT!

You should explain that to your boss...That's unfair.
Talk to him.

Re: On the job RANT!

I can relate. Although I'm not in a skilled industry, I watch as new hires come in making as much as those of us who have been there 3 years or more. I know because I am quite tight with my immediate boss. He never disclouses their actually pay, just says they shouldn't be complaing which most of them are.
I understand that the cost of living has raised here in the last 5 years, but none of us have seen cost of living raises.Frustrating

Sorry now I'm ranting....it is good medicine to get on here!!

Leave....
Im not bothered too much about money, job satisfaction is more important..

they did that to me in my last job.. I was like "hey youre not paying me enough" and they did nothing so I left..
when I put in my notice they gave me a £5000 pa rise !!!
it didnt work, I left anyway.. because sometimes its more important that people dont take the piss out of you !

Leave !!

Re: On the job RANT!

Im working at this one place and the opportunity for a better job came up and as soon as they came up with it, I said Id do it. Both to the owners wife who came up with the idea and then the owner himself. What do they do? The give the job to that little prick of a wigger who listens to nothing but rap all day and hates black people. WTF?! So Im last in line I guess. Yeah, soon as I find another job, Im putting in my two weeks and getting the hell out of there. F*cking pricks.

Re: On the job RANT!

That really sucks Steve.I feel for ya and i agree you need to look elsewhere. You could use the "job satisfaction" excuse if the difference was like a couple hundred bucks, but 10/12 GRAND.And they ask you for advice!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are being taken for a mug by them so you should either stand up or move on.Good luck.

Bottom line, if they're Microsoft Certified and you're not, there's the difference right there. Most corporate structures like this have pay scales based on degrees, certifications, NOT on experience. A$$ backwards, but that's a suit for you.

Get certified.

Re: On the job RANT!

Wow and I'm just doing my A+ certification HARHARHAR...

Seriously though, I'm just about getting into the field (I've 1 year experience as a junior tech) and even I know that they want the qualifications. That's why I'm staying in a reasonable paying job that I don't like for the moment until I get the paper.... then I can get a crappy paying job I enjoy

Experience and qualifications are obviously the 2 main ingrediants of the pie.

Re: On the job RANT!

I'm in a unique position at my current company. I work as an asst. manager for a large refrigeration, hvac wholesaler. I've been in the same field since 1983 with 2 different firms. I'm an inside sales / design / technical specialist. My office is in our Baltimore regional HQ. In a nutshell, I run the day to day operations behind the counter, while my immediate supervisor, the branch manager, handles the infrastructure, stock orders, shipping and receiving.

My salary is higer than 90% of the 37 store managers, yet I don't have the headaches of dealing with the regional manager whose ear is constantly being chewed on by the adninistration at our HQ. My boss is the best guy I've ever worked for. I get 17 days of paid vacation plus 5 sick days per year. He lets me have first pick of days on the calendar and will allow 2 days off with only 24 hours notice. If an appointment or family emergency arrises, our missed time is almost never charged and we receive a full days pay.

On top of all of the benefits, it's not uncommon to pull in $100 in tips from appreciative customers whose orders are delivered to the docks, ready for weekend jobs. We work in climate controlled offices, while our customers are working twice if not 3 times as hard, in hot, greasy kitchens, hellishly hot attics, dirty crawlspaces and muddy construction sites.

It's a detail intensive job and the orders must be ready when specified or your customers will find another supplier who can deliver results.

With all of the perks and opportunities for advancement in a business such as mine, why is it so difficult to find qualified, conscientious, hard working people? The veterans who come over from competitors are mostly lazy and unfriendly. Most of the younger new hires from out of school are unwilling to learn. They start in the warehouse to learn the equipment and parts, but tire of the work an labor involved as a beginner. When they are brought in to work the counter and wait on customers, they project their bad attitudes towards customers who they percieve as someone who is making them "go out of their way". They don't get it that the main point of our company's existence and growth is driven by our customer's needs and how well we perform for them when compared with our numerous competitors.

If any jemsiters in the MD, DC or eastern VA area are looking for a job with great benefits and above average pay, we're hiring. We cover all of MD, DC and VA from Roanoke east to Norfolk and all of Northern VA.

: rant / throat clearing mode off :

What the heck am I doing, sitting here posting in a work related thread? I took a vacation day today. I think I'm gonna put in for an hour of OT because I thought about work on my day off!

Sounds like something I would have said four months ago

Just make sure you have a new job first Steve It's tough out there these days!

Hang in there man! First off, GET "certified" or this will continue to happen. AS far as the girl. I've found F up employees usually ALWAYS end up putting their own neck in the noose. She's not like really HOT or something is she??? I hate to say that but from my experiences, it seems to make a big difference in the corporate world Gawd, I even know how to change out a hard drive and I am about as computer literate as my great grandfather was:-)

I hear you on the money thing too. At this new job I finally GOT (YEAH) There is a girl that works there that I trained and tutored in prior company. She had no experience / knowledge of the job or the insurance field whatsoever when we hired her. Now I go to work where she is. I have the credentials! She doesn't! Same job! She's making 15k more That's just the way it is. I'm not bitchin because she as great gal and very smart. Just doesn't seem fair. But hey......I got a job

I feel your pain Steve. Just please remember" "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"

Or is it

Best of wishes and good luck

Re: On the job RANT!

I absolutely HATE hearing these stories!!! Not fair, look for a new job, don't help the new people out if you can away with it, keep a folder of all the different things that you help them with, & get certified!!! Than go to your boss asking for a raise, no success, get a new job.

Rich, good point. but they are not certified. the one guy worked in sales (not pc's) the other was in cust service in level 1 helpless desk trying to troubleshoot basic calls. the other guy knows what he is doing but still asks me for help. none of them are certified at all. sure, i'm not, and kind of would like to be but the money was never there. plus, i was a film / audio / photo major. didn't have an interest in pc's but 12 years ago, i really loved it, fell into it, and hit the ground runnin'. that is why i never pursued the certs....cuz i can just do the stuff and it was never a goal to get them. i have 10 years on the job in different large corp. environments and have been level 2-3 tech support for the last 5 years (previous job and this.) i'm on call for the CEO and CFO, etc etc. it's not fair but it doesn't matter. they don't see any of that stuff.

now, i agree. bring it up to my boss. i actually did. she is new herself. she is cool but doesn't know how to proceed. she said she would talk to her boss. problem with that.....the jerk that used to be our boss doesn't know a mouse from a keyboard (and he was the manager...joke.) not to mention a total @#$*!. we lost a few techs and my x-supervisor cuz of his stupidness. very long story short, he put a bad taste in the mouth of the big boss in corporate before he left and i'm on her bad list along with some others. so opening my mouth may not be good. i did email HR today and spoke with my new boss a week ago.

i hope i get this new job i applied for 2 weeks ago. i should find out this week. i don't want to jynx myself by talking about it.

my good friend left cuz of the pay issues. he brought it up for a year and it really p'd them off! anyway, he got a job that pays much more. THEN THEY OFFERED $5K MORE!!! he was tempted but did the right thing. he said WHERE WERE YOU A YEAR AGO!

many people face this. i deal with a lot but when someone asks me....can you help me install a new hard drive since i only did it ONCE a year ago......and they make $12k more!!!! it's more than certs at that point.

oh, and the chick is not hot. she's a non-hot mom. opposite of hot.

Re: On the job RANT!

Having MCSE is not really a big deal. The reasons being, you can actually buy the test papers on the internet. You can actually download them from Kazaa and they are very accurate indeed. Many did buy the papers on the net. Funny thing is that, even if you know the MCSE syllabus by hard, it does not guarantee that you pass your exam. Microsoft will give you questions beyond the syllabus. Having said, if you have a degree , by right you should earn more than they do if they dont have any degree. Probably the best thing is to treat your boss to a dinner and gently break to her about your intention of getting a higher pay. Be soft.....Things dont work out if you are emotional...Good luck
