The last decent guitar magazine in the US is gone...

Well, I just picked up the latest copy of Guitar One, and I was starting to think that they were really coming along nicely. They have a much cleaner format now, like the UK's Guitar Techniques, and the current issue featured Alex Lifeson, Reb Beach, Petrucci, Steve Howe, and Robert Fripp - all great players! Not to mention the fact that this magazine previously recently interviewed Paul Gilbert.

Anyways, they started posting the videos online instead of a CD in order to make the magazine cheaper (I hated buying an $8 magazine...). So I go online to check out the videos, only to find that Guitar One is no more. Apparent the parent company, Future Media, told them to pack their bags on a very short notice.

Here's what the editor had to say:

Looks like we're left with the immaturity and mediocrity of Guitar World now

Ah, what the hell?!?
This sucks big time. I loved Guitar One.
At least I won't have to have anymore fights with my wife where I try to justify spending $8 on a magazine. But that's a small consolation...

That's why I subscribed for $12/yr. I have a stack of CDs I never used from when I had to buy the magazine with it.

Wow, there have certainly been quite a few mags that have disappeared over the years.

$8 for a mag is cheap in comparison to our prices. I pay AU$15 for Guitar Techniques...They need to bring Guthrie back, it's not the same without his transcriptions.

That really blows. I just started buying this mag last year and now it's gone. Australia had just started receiving the CDs with the mag for a few issues, then no cd announced in the latest one to arrive here (Pentatonic special), and a few issues later gone.

I'll miss it, it reminded me of the old Guitar School mags I used to get when I first started playing back in 1992.

I'm still trying to decide which one to subscribe to. My Guitar Player sub ran out. I guess it will be GP again.

I really miss the old Guitar For the Practicing Musician, talk about dating myself lol!
Now if only GW would add standard notation to the songs.

GFTPM was cool, but it was the worst assembled magazine ever.

Yeah, it was made from the cheapest paper, like old recycled newsprint.

I dont think one of my old issues still has the cover completely intact, and they've just been in boxes for years.

Re: The last decent guitar magazine in the US is gone...

A buddy of mine was in a used book store in east texas and bought a few boxes full of good condition GFTPMs... and man what a great mag it was! Even reading it 15 years (plus) later, they were absolutely lightyears beyond the TigerBeat-esque crap that passes for guitar mags these days.

I just wish Japan's Young Guitar was available in english. I've seen them at tower records in nashville - i could read the names and look at the pictures and tabs, but that was about it!

Just took up a new subscription to The Guitarist. Ouch.

That said, their content doesn't read like the inside of Kerrang! and their gear reviews are superb.

Average month: Pick up Guitarist. Read (cover to cover). Acquire GAS. Go to favourite shop in the world. Ask "Have you got (insert product name here) in yet?" Hear reply, "Not yet". Listen to wallet breathe huge sigh of relief.
