Learning how to use 3D studio max

Just acquired this little piece of kit in the hopes of teaching myself how to use it, and create works of the like I see on this here site, BUT it's all very complex for a guy like me.

So far, using the 'net, I've managed to learn how to create simple objects, merge them, use splines/lathe, etc, but I cannot seem to find anything that goes RIGHT from the beginning. I've tried to create things using the tutorials, but they seem very 'point and click' - Lets you create things but doesn't explain how or why you are altering values. I've only really learnt things from the Help file - I made a few chess pieces, but got lost on the material creation.

Can someone point me in the direction of a book/site that goes RIGHT from the beginning? Would be muchly appreciated!

Thanks,

~M

Made one thing so far; trying to figure out how to make a decent gloss wood material!

Good god this stuff is fun.
