LGM Guitars update, December 15, 2005 MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone, hope the upcoming holiday season is finding everyone happy and healthy!

As most of you know, LGM Guitars has recently moved to the west coast (well, within 40 minutes of it) to Abbotsford, British Columbia.
The move went smoothly, though things have become bumpy since getting here.
I am moved into the new shop now, but have come to discover that this city is NOT small business friendly in any way! I have been waiting for what seems like ages to get the paint shop up and running but there have been a couple of snags.
Firstly was getting the financing approved, that took longer than we wanted. But it finally happened.
Secondly, the wait for the booth itself. This is a brand new 14' x 24' automotive booth, going big this time The booth was expected to be here over a week ago but is now scheduled for delivery December 20th, 2005.
Third, getting the permits for the paint booth has proven more than difficult. The city wants engineered drawings of the building, the site, the booth, elevations etc etc etc. I have contacted the mayors office as it was looking like I wouldn't have permits until mid January, but the mayors office has said they will do everything possible to have the permits to me by xmas! Here's hoping!
As a result, there are many guitars that I wanted desperately to have to customers before xmas, but I have not been able to finish the paint on them. In a fit of desperation I even tried contacting several local body shops asking what they would charge to clear coat bodies or if they would rent booths. None will rent a booth, and they all want ridiculous amounts of money to clear the bodies, upwards of $500 each. When I only charge in the neighborhood of $250 for complete paint, I simply can't do this. So I do truly apologize for the guitars that have not made it out.
I am also very happy to announce, and regretful at the same time, that once up and running, LGM Guitars will be taking orders only for Leviathan instruments. This may change in the future, but currently the work load is so high that I cannot take on the other work. However, as I stated in past posts, IF you are really set on having LGM Guitars do a special job for you, contact me, I will take on other work with the understanding that it may take 12 months if not more. Sadly I have work here right now which has fallen victim to this timeline. Most customers have been extremely patient, one customer who has ordered an 8 string also ordered an 8 from Conklin....... 3 YEARS AGO and still hasn't received it. This is no excuse for my lateness, but at least it makes me realize that I'm not the only person who probably doesn't make the best possible use of my time.
Anyway, the guitar backlog is slowly getting cleaned up and instruments are being shipped out. As soon as the new booth is in place many more will be finished and shipped. Again I apologize for the wait, I feel confident that the wait will be worth it in every case though!
Thank you for everyones support, patience and continued patronage.
Wishing you all the best and a very Merry Christmas!!!!!

Jeremy

Getting help requires 2 things

1. The money to do so

2. Somebody who really knows what they are doing.

There is a catch 22 in this. It's easy to hire somebody for minimum wage, but it typically creates more work for you. I know this from my years working as a machinist. When you have somebody dirt new, you have to take the time to train them. I don't have time to do all the work myself much less train somebody. If you hire somebody who knows what they are doing, they cost more per hour to have work for you. I can't afford that dollar wise.
Plus, with the cost of the new shop, I can't afford myself right now. I'm happy to just be breaking even right now.

Plus all the other issues in hiring somebody politically and legally. I wish it were as simple as just hiring somebody, but sadly it's not. When it comes right down to it, you have to do things that are the best for the overall picture, and right now that means limiting the work that I'm doing to be able to focus and concentrate just on that. Having to many eggs in one basket is what got me so far behind to begin with. It's time to minimize my items and maximize my time, gotta get ahead again before I get to far ahead of myself

LGM, happy holidays to you and congratulations on the new shop. We all know your work is worth the wait. I'm sure you'll get caught up in no time once you get the new booth up (that must be nice). It's nice to know there are still builders out there that care enough to build a quality product.

glad the move went well, as far as BC is concerned..you might try getting in contact with Scott Heatley, he is also in the BC area and might be able to point you in the right direction as far as resources..he's a good down to earth guy and a great luthier

(i'm currently having a guitar built by him)

Heh. Saying "also in the BC area" is like saying "also in the Alaska area"... BC is a lot of square miles.

Plus, there's water in between.

I wish I lived near you. I would love to work for you free of charge, just to get some of your experience and knowledge. Best wishes for the holidays and new year. You make some awesome guitars, keep up the great work. chef21

Re: LGM Guitars update, December 15, 2005 MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly Jeremy congrats on the new shop and good luck.

Second is there anyone else out there that does custom fretboards? I'm thinking about having an ebony fretboard with custom inlays put on a wizard neck... was going to contact LGM, but that's obviously no longer an option.

Hmm come to think of it LGM was also the only place I've seen advertise cloth guitar finishes. Damn.

Re: LGM Guitars update, December 15, 2005 MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's an update again for you all

FINALLY on December 23, after over a weeks worth of "It will arrive tomorrow" my paint booth showed up!!!!! myself and 4 friends worked for 13 hours yesterday to start setting it up. I spent another 5 hours today on it. Now I need the electrical, fire suppresion, and ducting/roofwork done and it's ready to go.
Anyway, here are some pic's of the new shop, it's a mess since the booth came in, things aren't all set up yet but it's getting there. This has been a heck of a journey but finally the destination is in sight!

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!!!

Jeremy
