Re: major pc problem :(

Sounds like smitfraud. I don't feel comfortable in telling you how to fix it, since I've never had one so bad the computer wouldn't even boot. Have you tried booting into safe mode?

Re: major pc problem :(

When you push the power button, wait 10 secs untill you see all the writing and jargon. push F8, do this before the windows logo starts, if you see that then you need to restart the machine and try and catch it again.

F8 will bring up the Windows pre boot selections. Choose Start in SAFE MODE..

This should boot windows in its basic form. You may get a question to choose if you want to start up with the ability to restore.. Select yes to that...

Once windows in loaded in safe mode.

see if you can run a virus software program, obviously run the one you actually installed in the first place not the fake one.

Once thats done

Then do a system restore. and restore it to an early state do it a day or 2 before the incident..

Good luck..

Re: major pc problem :(

If you cruise porn sites without a serious AV program then this is what happens. It's not a question of if but when.

Look for the name of the fake anti-virus, as that will help define the particular worm/rootkit in it, whcih will it easier to fight efficiently.

Re: major pc problem :(

In the end if you can't fix it, buy a new hd and dump yours.
If you have important data there you really need to recover, call a tech.
I heard sending swirled guitars to Brazil sometimes kills those virus

Re: major pc problem :(

Try to get the windows task manager open (ctrl+alt+delete) at login then kill all virus processes. If your PC is not set to auto-login to windows (which is absurd but people run PCs without passwords, etc.) this will be easy.

Then install microsoft security essentials (download from an alternate pc and install from usb drive) and run a full scan. It will probably clean it if you can get it installed using the above. I've done it several times. Don't restore or uninstall/install anything else as it triggers latent malware using the installer... glen

It hasnt died. Its the liberal media telling you lies. Theres no proof your pc died, and you are propagating chaos.

Re: major pc problem :(

virus/malware did that. If you can use F8/safe mode that might allow it but probably not.

do not install any software to fix this

Try this: Start -> Run

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

useful article here:
http://www.windows-help-central.com/...nistrator.html

Microsoft article here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555480

It's likely possible to clean up if you can kill the malware tasks then scan with MSE... glen

Re: major pc problem :(

This is the "fakealert" virus and its a real MONSTER to get rid of!!! The only way I was able to clean it out was from a separate drive running a separate OS..... Install your anti-virus program onto the new drive... then run a scan on the old drive...... This should get you going again.

This was the ONLY way that I could get rid of it because fake alert disables task manager, internet connectivity, and will not allow you to start any exe. programs

I found this program when looking up how to defeat this virus and it was VERY good. I highly suggest it.

Re: major pc problem :(

trust me on this... malwarebytes won't work. every pc i clean has it installed (and many norton/mcafee also LOL)

once you remove the HDD and scan you might have an unbootable PC also but the final step before wipe/format/reinstall... glen

As much as I completely agree with you... Malwarebytes DID get this one oddly enough. I use PCTools spyware doctor w/antivirus normally which stops this virus dead now, but I got it (fake alert) when it was brand new, while trying to clean a buddies HD on my machine.

@Duck: that rediculous!! at the very worst you need to buy a new HD.... you can get them for less than $50.
