Migraines?

I am in the midst of a NASTY full blown one that I have had for a little over 12 hours. Codeine helped a bit, but not enough and the Excedrine Migraine's I took aren't kicking in yet. Anyone have a sure fire way of reducing the tension of this thing, i.e.; what do you do to get rid of a migraine that doesn't involve OTC or Prescription drugs?

Re: Migraines?

I have migraines just I don't throw up from them, I also don't throw up from stomach flu's usually (odd...) also I don't take prescription cause the side effects are like crazy, no otc meds work for me so only way for me is to try and sleep in darkness all day. In the long run you should start checking what type of migraines you have and what are the causes and try and stop it. Mine are stress so it is like impossible to stop

Re: Migraines?

I also agree with sleep in the gark and quiet. Certain foods also trigger migraines: Old cheeses, red wines, vinegars, pickled stuff, chocolates, beer, etc. Hope it passes soon.

Re: Migraines?

I get migraines regularly. I have had prescriptions that are suppoed to lessen the effects of the migraine, but nothing that really works - except for Aleve - of course I have to take at least three, which probably isn't the best idea.

Lay down in a cool darkened room, avoid caffeine.

Hope you feel better - sometimes these things make ya want to die.

Prayer? It worked for me.
I used to get them at least twice a year until about twelve years ago. I was at church and this guy asked if anyone who had migraines wanted to be prayed over. I thought, "Why not?" He prayed for me and that was the end of them.

Re: Migraines?

I've suffered with migraines since I was 12 years old. When I first started getting them they would last days, I've now managed to cut them down considerably. Whenever I get a migraine, the first thing I do is eat something with protein. I know it's the last thing you want to do when you have a migraine, but keeping your blood sugar steady helps alot. I usually eat a piece of cheese or a hard boiled egg or just something protein for my blood sugar. I take and excedrin and then I get a zip lock freezer bag and fill it with ice cubes. I wrap that in a small towel and place it on my pillow and lay down with the ice pack on the back of my neck. Sleeping in a quiet and cold dark room is the best cure. If you have someone who can give you a neck and shoulder massage that will help alot if it's a tension headache. I hope this helps you. Feel better.

Re: Migraines?

Yeah I get migraines too,Ive tried cutting out everything thats supposed to cause them such as cheese, chocolate, red wine etc, never found the cause although eating food with Monasodium Glutamate does seem to be one cause also too much time on some computers and playing computer games for too long also seems to be a contributor.
They last generally around 8 hours for me so Im quite lucky compared to alot of sufferers and they are not as intense as they used to be although I get the disturbed vision which in many ways is the worse part for me and I also vomit, but that seems to be the mark of them starting to ease.
Ive been to the doctor on several occassions in the past and been given different medication to either prevent or lessen the effects, none of which made the slightest difference. What works best for me is taking ibruprofen such as Anadin Ultra(dont know what it's called in the States)
I read in a paper the other day that yoga is supposed to help prevent attacks, that maybe work a try,Im certainly going to give that a go

Re: Migraines?

I tend to get visual aura's before a bad one comes on. Then I get a blind spot. Followed by extreme pain and vomiting.

What has worked for me is the new Nasal Spray. When you feel even the first signs of a migrane you spray it in you nose, it goes directly to work and the headache passes. This has done wonders for me and I havent had one in a long time.

If anyone needs the name of the medicine, I can have it later today.

Re: Migraines?

Wearing sunglasses every second you're outside can help stave them off a bit. My brother and I get them (he worse than me) and his doctor said to never leave the hose without glasses. I haven't had one in months now, and I probably should/would have had two or three in that time.
That nasal spray sounds awesome though, I'm thinking everyone will want the name of that medicine!

same, just I still can't figure out why I don't get vomiting from like anything, if it is an extreme stomach flu I might throw up once or twice but that is it... it is very strange
