Moving to London...

...at the end of the Summer, or so it seems. Any advice for me, things to keep in mind etc.?

I realise that I am commiting a financial suicide, but I am going to grad school there, so hopefully it will pay off.

I hope to check out the Jemfest UK too, if it happens next year.

Re: Moving to London...

You're mad!

Main thing to keep in mind is the cost of accomodation, though if you are looking at renting don't let yourself be screwed over. There are way more flats to rent than there are renters so you'll be able to talk the owner down in price.

Where are you going to school?

Re: Moving to London...

Best thing about UK is you can enjoy fine the fine ale, stuning countryside and most of all, high taxation. Enjoy!

Re: Moving to London...

Make sure you go to Soho (denmark st, Charing Cross Rd, nr Totenham Court Rd tube). Here you can have a good laugh......at the guitar prices

Agree with Sanitarium, hunt down a few good real ale houses and try some of the trad beers. At the same time, get a part-time job in the pub to help pay for the extortianate rent

Re: Moving to London...

Make absolutely sure you get a place in a hall of residence (dorm) as finding accommodation in London can be very difficult and very expensive.
If you want to live anywhere near the Uni and not pay absolutely extortionate prices you'll have to bug the Uni to find you accommodation.

The 2 biggest benefits of moving from Canada to the UK will be that
1. London-Greece and London-Poland are less than 4 hour flights and tickets are less than £150 return
2. Every band/artist that tours Europe plays London.

I'm only 40miles west of London (Reading) so when you come over you can give me a shout and I'll meet you for a Saturday and show you all the good guitar stores there.

Other than that you'll be surprised how many polish people there are here now, it'll seem very strange to you.

Re: Moving to London...

I've got friends at most of the London Unis, i could set you up with a uni tour if you want? Also, definatly definatly definatly get a hall of residence place-£80 a week instead of up to £200 for non-uni. It's ridiculously expensive in the city!

Re: Moving to London...

Thanks for the replies guys,

I definately will be applying for place in halls, since from what I see it is the most cost-effective solution.

Algiman - LSE, if all goes well...

Sanitarium - Definately looking forward to the ales

Ilia - Glad you remember where I am from - good flight connections to Warsaw are definately an important point for me. Thanks a lot for the offer to show me around, I will keep that in mind

Gurj - Re: Polish ladies - Damn right!

Globbits - Thanks for the advice, and the uni tour offer, I'll remember that

All in all I am happy to be moving to a place with such high jemsite-concentration

Re: Moving to London...

There is one upside to our crazy economy mate! When you've got a bit of spare cash after a few months you can make good use of the fantastic pound-dollar rate by shipping another Jem out of the US and back to good old Blighty! LOL
At the very least the prices in our guitar shops will give you something to chuckle about!

Re: Moving to London...

Wow, awesome news Pawel. I really hope you enjoy your time there. London can be beautiful and inspiring, and truth be told I miss her, now that I'm in Japan. There are certain thing I most definitely do not miss! And yet...the tide of memories wash over me, and I recall walking through Piccadilly Circus on a beautiful sunny afternoon, when every face seemed to smile, stealing a kiss from a wonderful girl on a rainy morn, treading barefoot on the grass in Regent's Park as I watched ducks clamour for a morsel tossed their way by a laughing child.

Sigh!

A few hours ago, however, I watched the sun set over Enoshima Island. The sky was vast and every shade of red and blue and gold came out to shine...just because they could. The glowing ocean before me, endless misty forest all around.

Japan or London...it's nearly always time to get the train back home.

Good luck.
