MP3 player help

Hey Folks,

I bought my girlfriend an Ipod shuffle for her birthday, we plugged it into her laptop (WinXP) and it did the "new hardwear found and installed" thing.

So I went to my computer and it was listed as a drive ... so cool ... we dragged a load of mp3's to the device... I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but it wont play them.

what do I have to do to get them to play

any advice would be helpful

Steve

Re: MP3 player help

Have you used itunes to load the mp3s into it? As far as I know, most apple devices force you to use iTunes it to load music files into their devices but, I could be wrong.

Thanks for the reply.

Didnt use iTunes, just dragged and dropped them to the ipod.

would rather not use itunes if its avoidable, but if its a necessary evil then so be it

Yeah, man...welcome to the pitfalls of the iPod. Yes, I believe that iTunes is required. The files don't all have to be M4P (or whatever the iPod proprietary file type is called), as it does play MP3 files, but I believe you do have use iTunes to "manage" the media files. There are probably ways around it, but I'm not sure. Google is your buddy in this regard.

That's the main reason I went with something other than an iPod.

Re: MP3 player help

iTunes is not the ONLY game in town, you can go to www.mediamonkey.com for their free player/ loader, but you must import them via a client. If you just drag and drop to the 'drive' that's all you're doing is storing them, not registering them to the player.

Ephpod is another freebie.

Re: MP3 player help

Yeah, dragging the files over is just using the storage like any other USB flash drive. You have to use iTunes (or equivalent) to load them.

Re: MP3 player help

I am a computer tech by trade. Far a VERY long time I avoided ALL Apple products just for the reasons stated above. I have gotten used to the Apple way of doing things, and while I think there are better ways, I have become accustomed to it. I still download all my songs, audiobooks, movies, ect. Unfortunatly Apple has the best players with the best software by FAR. I have had many other players and none of them compare. I now use an Ipod Touch, Iphone(hacked for T mobile) and a 60gig Ipod classic.
