The new Nissan GTR

Am I the only one who doesn't like it? I'm sorry, I love the older R32, 33 and 34s...i've wanted a skyline forever...but when Nissan finally brought the GTR to US shores it's price point was well over double that of a used Dodge Viper!

I mean, c'mon, we all know it's fast, but seriously?

It looks kinda like a honda to me from some angles...

This isn't my GTR...this sucker is huge, no matter how fast it is, it doesn't even really remind me of a sports car anymore...maybe the V Spec trim does, but still...

::sigh::

Re: The new Nissan GTR

I agree, it is rather tankish. The last generation Skyline was so much better looking. I'm sorry, but the current chunky cars just don't do it for me. You are so right about the price. For the amount you would be spending on that over engineered Nissan, you could easily have a 911; the real deal.

I'd never buy a GTR.

Re: The new Nissan GTR

I was lucky enough to attend the public launch of the car at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

You also have to remember that the car is intended for the Japanese market. In which it is priced at roughly 1/2 the price of a 911 with similar performance. Having witnessed the car on the road and on the track, for it's price point (It's domestic price at launch was equivalent to £33,000 ) nothing came close in the wet or the dry. If you were buying the 911, you were buying the badge.

The UK price is now £70,000 and most UK motoring magazines still consider it a bargain.

And no I don't own one, I couldn't justify spending a years wage on a car.

Re: The new Nissan GTR

Faster than turbo 911, half the price? Yes please. I wouldn't be wasting my money on the Porsche.

Now you're talking. Developed by Senna and loads of scope for tuning.

Seriously though. I understand why a Dodge Viper would be attractive, but the GTR's realy do handle incredibly well and it has 85 more BHP.

Either way, I think you have to judge cars based on their relative performance, so here are the Top Gear Lap Times for the 3 cars mentioned.

Dodge Viper SRT-10 1.28.5
Honda NSX Type R 1.31.6

and the GTR?

Nissan GT-R 1.19.7

It isn't even a fair fight, it's a bloodbath

It is faster than any Porsche (including the Carrera GT!) and a long way clear of any muscle cars.

Re: The new Nissan GTR

In Alabama, I can score a used Viper for around $32-35k w/ 20-30k miles. 50 on the high end. MPG sucks, but man, its a serious status car.

On the same token, I bought my Subaru for 6k and can STi swap it for about 4.

Thats a $20k difference for not a terrible difference in performance vs. daily drivability.

Now versus $50k for a used Skyline or $60-80k for a 911 turbo, that is a big difference, considering id have to dump another 20 grand to match their performance.

Re: The new Nissan GTR

I think that this is the salient point. It is how much you actually want to spend

I could never afford a GTR. I have considered Imprezzas over here, but I hate the understeer.

However if you want quite fast and very cool, look for a Maserati 4.2 GT. The engine is derived from the F430 block and the production is overseen by Ferrari. You can pick them up here for £20,000. That is a proper Italian gt/supercar.

Hell yeah - A beautiful car that and an absolute steal at the price considering the heritage and class.

Only problem is the cost of servicing etc.. A friend of mine had one and did it himself as didn't fancy the huge costs of going to even a halfway decent dealer. No one sane would even think about buying one without considering this though :-)

Re: The new Nissan GTR

You speak truth sirs. Theres a car lot down the street that moves Mas's proper for $40ish. Maintenence is the same as a Ferrari though, yes?

Man, I bet they are sick though, they have a red granturismo RIGHT NOW... they probably only want like 42 for it, I think thats what they sold the last one for a few weeks ago...

Re: The new Nissan GTR

I agree they a bit large. My friend has a 2010 GTR, and I have a 2010 Mustang. We parked them together, its even bigger than mine!

Those things are monster runners though. I like 'em.

Re: The new Nissan GTR

Funny how top gear doesn't include the Z06 Corvette. Hopefully in the future. The Z06 is hands down the price/performance leader (IMO).
