OMG Internation Shipping Cost

Some may know I am selling a guitar in this forum. A few have asked if I would ship overseas. I said sure. Once chap gave info so I used it at ups.com to calculate the shipping cost to his area. WTF, it is OMG expensive.

Here is a SS of the UPS page with the cost. Did I do something wrong. I meausred the box it will be shipped in with the weight as came on the orginal label. It will be shipped in the boxes that my RGT22A came in. I told the dude he might be better off looking local. I hate to lose a sale but don't want to see anyone hosed either. Can these figures be correct?

Re: OMG Internation Shipping Cost

I went to USPS.com and they only asked for country and going to Scotland, Great Brittan it was WAY less. Before I ship internationally I want to make sure both I and the buyer don't get screwed. I need some advice here.

Use Escrow for assurance of money.

USPS is absolutely fine, just get insurance for it. I had a guitar of $800 shipped and insured with them for $158, and it was here by the end of the week.

I've received guitars tons of times through USPS. Like Danny says, just get insurance, but also get a tracking number because you'd be suprised what can go missing if there is no tracking

I always get a tracking number when shipping and recieving items of value. That way I know "something" is comming or the same for a buyer.

The 52" carton is killing you. The 9" dimension is pretty thick as well. You should be able to find a standard Ibanez carton at your local music store.

20"x 45"x 6" is about standard, unless you're shipping a bass guitar.

Re: OMG Internation Shipping Cost

First of all UPS will rape you on postage charges. Doesn't matter if it's international shipping or domestic. It's a simple bend over and accept.

FedEx isn't much better, but I do find them to be alittle bit cheaper.

USPS is definitely the way to go. You just have to make sure you get insurance and write "FRAGILE" on each side of the package. It also helps if you get it so the person recieving the package has to sign for it. That will insure that it gets to where it's going unharmed. In the event that it is damaged upon arrival you've got someone in front of you that you can punch in the throat for it.

Re: OMG Internation Shipping Cost

USPS can take the full 10 days more often than not, which can definitely induce some panic on both sides I use USPS when I ship to the UK, and everything has always gotten there in great shape, but both sides need to be ready for that nail biting wait.

Re: OMG Internation Shipping Cost

"Dimensional Weight" is the killer- see how it shows that UPS will charge you like you're sending a 60lb parcel.

USPS isn't that bad price-wise, but they've recently started adding additional charges too like dimensional weight on large priority items (the cost to ship a guitar in the smallest-possible carton doubled). Then, if you decide to ship parcel post, they hit you up for "non-machinable" and "balloon" charges if the package is large but not proportionately heavy (like a guitar) so it's not that much cheaper. The PO near me started adding these charges only a few months ago and the first e-bay batch I took there, unaware of the changes, I took an f-ing bath on charges.

Still beats UPS, though. Sheesh.

Re: OMG Internation Shipping Cost

A small word of advice. whenever I get guitars shipped to me, and I'm in Israel if you haven't noticed, I ask the seller to unbolt the neck. that way the package is smaller and it cost only 60$ to ship from the states to Israel with usps international priority. I also found that the number on the customs form is trackable through usps.com. ofcourse the seller need to agree to do that and the buyer need to beable to put it back together so I guess it's not for everyone. Hard shell case is a different story all together.
