Re: Passion and warfare or Flying in a blue dream?

Passion & Warfare had a huge impact on me when it came out but so did Surfing and Flying in a Blue Dream... but, fer laffs, to answer your question I'd go with Flying in a Blue Dream over P & W simply because I enjoy the album more as a collection of songs...If I am going to sit down and listen to one of the two albums I would rather sit down and listen to Flying in a Blue Dream...

Passion & Warfare has a cooler album art.

Seriously? on a Jem forum? LMAO. Flying in a Blue Dream and Passion and Warfare. Well let's see, I can name most of the songs off of PAW and none off of FIABD. Gonna have to go with Mr. Vai on this one. Student schooled the teacher big time on this one.

Tough one.

Both albums are excellent and I love both artists.

Both albums have a few quirky tracks I don't care for.

Both albums also have a few stellar tracks.

I don't see them as being very directly comparable though. To me P&W was Vai's coming out album, his showcase showboating look at everything I can do with a guitar album. (Yes I know technically there was Flexible before that, but I personally can't stand that album and I don't think it was too mainstream).

Whereas for Satch I feel he already had that with Surfing (and to a lesser extent Not of this Earth). So with FIABD he is already on his way to an established solo career and the album stands for something else.

Re: Passion and warfare or Flying in a blue dream?

Man, I can't really see this one.

"Passion and Warfare" was Vai's breakthrough album - "Surfing with the Alien" would be the better comparison.

Meanwhile, "Flying in a Blue Dream" was Satch's "commercial" album, where he'd done well enough on his first that his label encouraged him to start adding vocal material with his instrumentals. "Sex and Religion" is probably the better comparison, or possibly "Fire Garden."

The problem here is while both albums are impressive, I don't really love either. For Vai, really his "Alien Love Secrets" is the only album I still listen to these days, and for Satriani, either "The Extremist" or more likely "Crystal Planet" would be the one I'd choose if I had to choose just one.

But, comparing Vai's most important album to Satch's second or third most important album is sort of odd, you know?

FIABD for me, no discussion.
Even if PAW is more "original" in the sense of "never heard music".
But Flying had a huge impact on me: the songs :I've spend days and nights working and playing over the bells of lal, the forgotte and flying: I had the original songbook 18 years ago, and still have it!!!

PAW. To me it is still one of the best solo albums ever.

Satriani's sound was great on FIABD but Vai's cutting sound felt so new and mind-blowing to me at the time.
And i think i still have the PAW songbook!

I still have both songbooks after all these years. I just realized that next month will be the 25th anniversary of the release of FIABD! ...and I remember buying it on cassette when came out...gawd time goes by too fast... =[
