to play or not to play

What are peoples opinions of playing collectible guitars, how much do they devalue by playing them out and getting nicked up. Is there value in having an actual real relic of a collectible? It's driving me crazy to have guitars and not play them for fear of dinging or wearing down

Re: to play or not to play

If I had a guitar that was collectible I'd want to play it really bad, I'd probably end up playing it or just selling it for multiple players lol (or an Axe-Fx haha)

Re: to play or not to play

I have always played out with vintage guitars as they are already 'aged' somewhat, but I would probably not play out with a Chrome Boy or something with a finish that shows every little ding.
I gigged alot with my '67 telecaster, '64 strat, '74 Les Paul, PMC, and a '58 martin acoustic- never thought twice about it. Guitars are tools.

An un-played guitar slowly turns to junk

Excellent advice, Well there goes my investments but I'm going to be a lot happier. I've always felt that they are just tools and that they need to be played. The more they get played to more mojo they get!

Re: to play or not to play

Probably the only guitar I have that's even close to being a collectible is an Ibanez Prestige S2540 from 1998. I do play it as my primary guitar, but sometimes I do regret it and feel like I shouldn't play it so much, but it's not that big of a deal to me.

I think you can play collectible guitars and still keep them pristine.

Well, some people can. I dent the hell out of anything I take out of the house.

Re: to play or not to play

If you don't want to dent up your guitars, don't play them in a cramped up little 4x4 room with lots of pokey and fragile equipment surrounding you. I never thought it was THAT hard to keep a guitar from getting dents, even if I drop it into a pile of cymbal stands the worst thing that usually happens is that it hits a tuner and one or two of the strings go out of tune. There's no point in having vintage guitars if you aren't going to play them, as there's cheaper guitars out there that look nice to hang them up on the wall.

If I was a guitar I'd rather be polished and string changed every day and hung up on a nice section of wall to be admired without being played than be banged up by a shirtless sweaty middle aged man who can't play properly in a sleezy bar. Dunno about you though

Re: to play or not to play

I think it would be a terrible waste of a guitar not to play it. I might have doubts about giging with a priceless telecaster but I'd definatley play it every day.

Re: to play or not to play

I have one Les Paul with a AAAA top that RARELY sees the light of day. It only comes out on rare occasions, and is locked away from my kids. I couldn't care less about the other guitars having some scratches, but that one stays away.

Re: to play or not to play

It's just wires and wood. Play that ****er!

I'm not a fan of case queens (incase you didn't notice) and I like my guitars with characters. Almost every guitar I own has some dings or scratches somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I take care of my guitars but just through regular playing **** happens.

Re: to play or not to play

I played the 20th anniversary Jem Friday night at an important gig for me. I over heard people talking about how cool it was the next day, made me feel it was worth the risk of playing it plus it is an awesome guitar
