Relic'd guitars

I CANT be the only one tired of this crap. An ibanez that is "relic'd" is abused and neglected and poorly taken care of. A gibson that is "relic'd" is the same, but a fender.... throw that bad boy off a cliff, drop it in bars, smash it on counter tops, and it now has "mojo".

Drives me bananas. The ad that I saw was a Tom Delonge MIM strat.

"The body is a Fender Tom Delonge Hardtail in Daphne Blue, somewhat relic'd (it has a big paint chip near the strap button and a few other dings, which provide character). The pickups and assembly are Fender Kenny Wayne Shepherd Signature. " (i.e. it looks like he dropped it several times, and didnt take care of it at all)

So "adding character" to fenders is ok, and desired, but doesnt hurt the value? I just dont understand people...

Re: Relic'd guitars

Relic'd = Euphemism for ABUSED. I've no sympathy for those taken in by the whole relic'd thing.

Re: Relic'd guitars

I am also tired of this, I can understand though why they are more expensive, since you could call it "work" to take a guitar, a hammer and beat the crap out of it. Also people are used to the look if the iconic instruments all the legends play. Personally i think that that's only to make more money. I personally would buy the normal model and "relic" it myself over the years. I like the battlescars better if they can tell my story and not one from some overpaid cliffthrower. The only relic'd guitar i would buy is a Vintage V6MRTBG and only because my guitar teacher gets them for 4/6 the normal price.(Endorsement deal with local Hughes & Kettner/Vintage dealer)

hmmm.. now that i think about it...Guitar Center should raise the prices for their showroom models, I mean they sure are relic'd.

Re: Relic'd guitars

Guitars relic'd by the mfg look like complete and utter crap to me. And the price tag they put on most of them makes it even more sickening.

Re: Relic'd guitars

I think it's somewhat silly. So I'd never buy one.

But maybe I'm looking at this wrong? I have a 70's LP copy that's "relic-ed". It needs some replacement parts badly (bridge, stop tailpiece & tuners).

Maybe it's worth $10K?

Re: Relic'd guitars

Relic'd = who the f*** needs QC anyway?!?

The big time sigs are the most disgusting. Yes, I understand that they painstakingly "age" these guitars so that they look like the original but it's crap.
Jeff Beck, EVH, and many of the big names should feel ashamed of themselves.

Evh has a relicd guitar??? Unless you're talking about the 25 limited edition guitars that are copies of his personal guitar that changed the course of rock history, that's ok. Copies of the "real deals" don't make me angry. Its the pointless but deliberate misuse of the guitars being "cool".
