Rep System for Jemsite....?

What are people's opinions on this? I use thestudentroom.co.uk, and their rep system is fantastic. It's a great addition to a forum.

Rep system? Like... so you can be rated and have a good/bad reputation? What if some a s s h o l e doesn't like you and gives you a bad rep because you fell out over plectrum gauges, then all your mates don't stand up for you?

Don't laugh, it could happen! Everyone on Jemsite would humiliate you for having a bad rep and stuff. "Har har, look at him, his c o c k must be tiny! Har har har!"

Re: Rep System for Jemsite....?

i think the rep system is rather pointless. In another forum i'm at they used it for awhile but it was stupid, tons of pointless threads were started so that people would just post and give each other tons of rep points. Then of course there were the guys that would just hand out tons of bad rep points for little to no reason and it kind of turned into a big battle. I would stay away from it. I mean what purpose does it serve? The only thing I can think of is for selling and trading and we already have the "iTrader" system that works fine.

dont knock plectrum guages i think thin as a sheet of paper is the only way to go and am prepared to headbutt anybody who wishes to disagree.

only joking rep system sounds like a good idea provided only mods can do ratings

Re: Rep System for Jemsite....?

I don't think a "rep" system is necessary at all. Anyone who has spent any time here has already developed their own opinions of the value and merit of various members' contributions. No reason to attempt to spell that out. Especially since, as already noted, there is no way to accurately and fairly establish the ratings in the first place. It's about as useful as 'bay feedback. Negative reinforcement. We can't agree on simple issues around here (nor should we) -- we certainly can't agree on whether someone's "opinion" is good or bad.

Re: Rep System for Jemsite....?

I don't think it is a good idea. Let individuals form their own opinions based on their experiences with you as opposed of people judging you based on your rep that other people may have formed on you based on maybe one or two bad experiences. Moreover, people change, their rep shouldn't stay with them when maybe they corrected or changed parts of who they once were. Not only those reasons above, but tone and facial expressions don't carry through on a forum and smiley icons don't suffice. Let's move forward, not live in the past!

No, I didn't mean I didn't like them or use them, because I do. But, I mean a smiley truly doesn't represent someones true emotions on a forum, they can be misconstrued that's all.

Oh you're in for it buddy!, if we ever get a rep system, I'm giving you a 1/5.

So far, Jemsite is the only forum I've been to that doesn't have rep systems and signatures and I think that's what keeps it so civilized, no one can hide behind their 5 star rating or obnoxious signature.
