Satriani contest (GC, whooznxt, "Master Satriani")

So, Guitar Center is partially sponsoring (I think) this contest where you pick one of 10 tracks, download the backing track, and record a video of yourself playing along to it (I'm assuming this is US only, but I didn't read the rules that carefully).
Is anyone else here participating ?

(http://satriani.whooznxt.com is the entry site)

My video that I submitted is here, it's a little rough, and probably could have been a lot better, but I'm lucky I recorded it at all, lol (I need to make more or a habit of these things for posterity's sake):

http://youtu.be/1pDFp6LSuGo

Question for the peanut gallery... you know how there are lots of people with covers of songs up on Youtube ? How do they not get their videos deleted on copyright grounds ? I'm sure there is some legit way to do it, but just wondering if anyone knows the secret ?
Thanks !

I signed up just to get the backing tracks.

I do like the backing tracks !
When I was in high school I tried sequencing many of these tunes myself on a keyboard...nothing like having the original backing tracks or something close though

Very nice playing, and well recorded--mix is very clear.
However, I'd get rid of the video distractions: RV in in the background, fiddling with sheet music and your watch while waiting to play, etc.
Just rerecord it without that stuff, and you've got a real shot.

Thanks for the tips and compliments !
I don't know if I'll get a chance to re-record it today (I think today is the last day to enter the contest). But if I do I'll take care of those parts.

Thank you. I spent a few days (over the course of a few weeks) working on the legato runs. I'm surprised the recording quality turned out as well as it did for a video camera, computer speakers and a Vox tube floor preamp effect box through an old Crate TD50c.

Hey man, checked out your video, nice job! Great playing and very melodic! I also entered the contest, here is my entry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NnDWggtuUY

Good luck! hopefully we can hang out in L.A. at the master class!

p.s. I have to agree, the TV was a little distracting. It probably wouldn't have been as bad if it hadn't been zooming in on peoples faces, kept grabbing my eye, haha.

I was under the impression that you had to write your own song for the backing track, am I wrong? Also you can enter until the 28th

I'm not 100% sure about writing your own song (it might have been suggested someplace, I didn't read everything too carefully).
Regarding the entry dates, I read through the rules a few times and I was under the impression that you could submit a video as late as August 11th, but that a winner wouldn't be chosen until August 28th.
It seems as though part of it is a popularity contest, and that Joe chooses the finalists out of a pool of the people who have the most fans. I could have that wrong, but that's the impression that I got (like I said though, I read through it, but probably not carefully to get all the details right).
I just figured, I'll record something, submit it, and see what happens. If I win, cool, if I don't, that's cool too. If this contest existed about 20 years ago, I would probably be more excited, lol

Re: Satriani contest (GC, whooznxt, "Master Satriani")

You guys did a great job on your performances and I'm enjoying a lot to see so many guitarists play over Satch tunes.

I guess I could have shared my video before but I barely had any time to post it (I submitted the video on the 11th @ 10:45 p.m. yikes!) and after I submited my performance, I have not been able to get in the forums or even play guitar... Work work work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL1sX...&feature=inbox

Although I could do the song note for note, I did my own take on the song because the contest rules were very vague in explaining exactly what they were expecting from the contestants and on top of that, the popularity part of the contest will be a deal breaker for those that don't have enough time to promote themselves or have that many friends. I didn't lke that part of the deal very much. You would understand if you go to the top 100 and carefully check oout some of the videos that are on top... Some of them are not even about the Satriani contest, so I don't know.

Well, I hope you enjoy it anyway and good luck to you all!

BTW, Sorry for not breaking out one of my Ibanez guitars for the video... as I've been using this guitar almost exclusively for over 12 years and it just feels like home.
