Shipping a guitar with Fedex

I recently bought a guitar from a guy in the USA and I'm asking him to ship it to Milan but he says that the Fedex site states that musical instruments are not allowed to be shipped to Italy. Anyone heard of this before (maybe to a different country)?

I've recieved two guitars from the states and I've never had any problems whatsoever (even though they were shipped USPS). It also sounds pretty odd to me that a company as big as Fedex won't ship musical instruments to Italy.

Re: Shipping a guitar with Fedex

Strange I had one guitar shipped with FedEx from California to Germany back in July 2004 and I had no problems whatsoever. I had to get a FedEx number first though but that I got quickly. FedEx can't ship to Denmark when it's not a business I heard.

Regards

André

Re: Shipping a guitar with Fedex

Just tell the guy to ship it USPS then, using Priority Airmail. If Fedex says no, then go to the Post Office

Ask him where exactly it is on the Fedex site so you can see for yourself

Yeah, I looked, I saw a lot of restrictions and prohibited stuff, but nothing about musical instruments at all.

Re: Shipping a guitar with Fedex

Did some research and I DID find some stuff on it.

http://pe.usps.gov/text/imm/immicl/immiclhk_012.html

Seems like USPS is also applying the same restrictions (check the fifth line). What I'm really wondering now is if this is something new or it's always been there and no one gives a **** about it. I'm positive my guitars got shipped with USPS in the past and there was absolutely no problem. If this is a new regulation though, I'm screwed...

I don't know about Italy, but I sent a guitar to the UK a month ago USPS without any problems at all.

Re: Shipping a guitar with Fedex

As far as I know, there is no problem sending musical instruments to Italy via FedEx. Italy, and most countries, prohibit the import/export of any items that make noise during shipment and may interfer with regular processing of packages. So USPS mentions bells as a prime example of such. There could be more to it though...

You can *try* calling FedEx at 1.800.463.3339 (1800 Go FedEx). Their customer service people sometimes know what is going on.
