Shipping Question

Anyone have any experience getting a guitar shipped from Japan? I have gotten a few shipped to me from Ishibashi and Mr Sparkle. Shipping generally took 3 or 4 days and was about $115. I have another guitar coming from Japan now and its been about 2 weeks (which Im ok with) and shipping was $170 ( which Im ok enough with), but I have a letter from the post office saying there is $`102 postage due. Not taxes or import fees but postage due. I never had to deal with any of that before. Is this common and I was lucky before or what. Im kind of confused and pretty angry

Re: Shipping Question

Thats kind of weird, are you sure its real? Ive been getting spam emails lately from "ups" and "dhs" saying I owe X money but the emails are always from a fake domain name and the IPs originate from countries like Nigeria.

Re: Shipping Question

yeah it's not an email, it was an actual note from the post office that they usually leave when you arent home for a delivery.

Re: Shipping Question

I've had that on t shirts from the states, Christmas cards from friends in japan but never on a guitar. My guess is that they have sent it the 'wrong' tariff, and you have been stuck with the bill, the two week delay might be because they had to work out what is going on.

In the UK, they send it back to the sender if you refuse to pay, so it's worth investigating properly

Re: Shipping Question

I'm betting it's customs and the dope that filled out your card did it wrong.

Re: Shipping Question

The seller can't control if you get charged or not unless he's breaking the law. Customs is on the buyer. Most of the time it slips thru [the EMS loophole] but I've had to pay several times. It's just a fact of international commerce.

Re: Shipping Question

If it was customs then the onus is on you

So there's no rhyme or reason to it, just sometimes you get away with out having to pay it? Guess I'll think about it as the $400 I saved then, not the $100 it cost me.

Anyway NGD thread coming soon

Re: Shipping Question

It's probably in the 10% range. I'd always get hit on guitars I could least afford though. If I overpaid for something, no doubt I'd get hammered with customs on it also!
