something that wrecked my day

3 guys book a hotel room for one night
The room costs 30 so they pay 10 each.
That evening, the hotel receives a memo from head office telling them that they have
decided to lower all prices to 25 a night, starting tonight, so the receptionist gives
the bellhop 5 to take up the room.
The bellhop decides, since 5 doesnt split 3 ways and that they didnt tip him earlier
he will take 2 and give the others 1 each.
So he does that, meaning that the 3 men pay 9 each and the bellhop has 2 for a
total of 29.
Where did the other pound go?

i just kept thinking about it and how it should work but it doesnt!!!
hope it does the same for you so i dont suffer alone!

Do you need help with this, or would I ruin your fun if I offer a solution?

This is where the trick is in this riddle. Actually, they each paid 9 pounds for a total of 27 and then they each received one back for 3 more. Total is 30.

Re: something that wrecked my day

You are adding and subtracting the wrong numbers at the wrong points.

So, they technically pay 27 dollars (3 guys x $9), but because the bellhop took 2 of those dollars, the right amount of 25 makes it to the hotel, and the guys keep their 3 dollars, the remainder of what they paid, even though they were still supposed to pay less...

So they pay 30 at first, the hotel give them five back, so the hotel only has 25, while 3 goes back to the guys and 2 goes to the bellhop, making 30.

Here is a chart so it is easier (yea, I was bored and have no life).

__________Hotel_____Men_____Bellhop____Total
step 1-___.__0_______30____.___0________30
step 2-_____30_______0________0________30
step 3-_____25_______0________5________30
step 4-_____25_______3________2________30

Tried hard to find the right color to "hide" the answer, but Bear has it right. They never paid £9 for the hotel.

ctrl+v: They didn't pay £9 each. They payed 25 (:3) for the hotel. Then the bellhop took £2, and the men got £3 back. Total: £30. The error is the £9.

i can see how the didnt pay 9 each based on the subtraction at the desk, but if you pay with a tenner and get 1 back then you do pay 9!

I can see how all of the money is accounted for, but I think this is one of those questions that is worded to lead you in the wrong direction of thinking.

Re: something that wrecked my day

The guys each paid $10 They each got back $1 so they did pay $9 each. The Bellhop still has 2 so it doesn't really add up when you look at it that way. My head hurts.

Re: something that wrecked my day

The guys paid 9 each, but they only paid 8.33 (25/3) to the hotel. They "paid" the rest to the bellhop.
