theramin and other strange instruments

Hey,

Does anyone own or has played a theramin?

I have seen some on videos and I have to say im tempted to get one. Im not sure where it will fit in exactly

There was a great track live on us TV by Thom York with another wild instrument playing thats how I ended up finding it.

This is like a single guitar wire or something... another interesting instrument. a martinot or something like that?

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

Never played one but i love strange/different instruments.
Medieval music with flutes and stuff and chinese ancient music are my favorites.
I always wanted to mix my music with those things but never found musicians who played those things.

For reference here is a Theramin

Its quite spooky. Maybe for a backing track for something quite moody.

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

Oh it's electronic and not acoustic so it's just a keyboard with that fingering sensor circus.
You just need a keyboard with a pitch bend wheel , a volume pedal or a boss slow gear pedal.
Boss gt-10 has a preset VERY close to that sound.

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

I've played a theremin and they are very very cool! An instrument you don't have to touch or blow into to play....in jazz 1 in high school, a guy named Booker (bass player) brought one in freshman year.

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

I really love strange instruments, Theremins, Synths, glass armonica. Love them all.

Here's what you can do with a Theremin...

Also Joe Bonamassa uses one

As did Led Zepplin,

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

Thanks for the reply Jimi.

I think I do need one.

*edit* Also... that led zep is the year of my birth, I must have heard that hundreds of times and I never knew it was a theremin on there. */edit*

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

I have watched a lot of other videos now, literaly all the ones I can find.

It strikes me a lot of people use it for just covering or mimicing other music. I am more interested in it a creativity source. If that makes any sense.

I did see some good clasical music interpretations and I think the people may well even be sight reading which is a pretty amazing achievement from what I have learned about the instrument so far.

Re: theramin and other strange instruments

anytime you have a strange instrument, people are going to use it to do covers and what not. It's never going to be a main instrument with out just being to weird, But it'll be a great layering and ambient sound tool for you.

Also just found out the Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria uses one...
