Took some pics with the new camera

Well today I finally had a chance at work to take some pics with the new camera. I am still learning and really would like to get some pointers since im totally new to the photography hobby.

I am learning slowly but really need to learn, apeture, shutter speeds etc.

Camera is a Nikon D50 with a 18-55mm Lens.. Stock flash when used.

anyways here are some pics..

yeah I really like it alot, but there is so much to learn and im so new to this its confusing as hell.

I really need to learn, and I really need to play with it more.

I know Glen is good with photography so hopefully he will chime in and maybe even help a brother out

What size are the originals? Nice details for a first go.

My Olympus point-n-shoot is handy for family occasions, but the versatility is lacking. Sometimes, I'd like to be able to disable the flash for low light effect, but the thing is completely auto. No manual overrides available. I can see a nice DSLR in the near future.

Re: Took some pics with the new camera

originals are 3008 x 2000 6.24 megapixels these are compressed quite a bit for bandwidth reasons of course..

I really need to get a book explaining photography LOL.. I am a total newb.

Re: Took some pics with the new camera

You've bought the right camera, congrats. Now try NOT to spend thounsands of dollars on lenses. :0)

Myself, I'd get 18-70mm lense with that D50. I have one myself (use it with D200) and it's great. You can get it for $200 used, which is what I paid for mine. You seem to like macro, and there's no better choice than Nikon for that. 60mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2.8 (VR and no VR), 200mm f/4 - they're all stunning lenses.

You MUST buy a tripod and a ballhead if you want to see what your camera is capable of. These two can cost as much as $1K if you want top of the line, but if you don't have a problem with carrying a bulky and heavy tripod, Bogen 3021 with 488RC2 ballhead can be had for $250.

You also need a prime lens. A lot of folks buy 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. I would advise to buy 35mm f/2 instead. It's a much better focal length for "crop" cameras. It's a light, well built and extremely sharp lens with pleasing bokeh. It also can be had for less than $200.
