Trying to sleep with the flu

Hey there, every year I get the flu about 3 times as do alot of people. Apart from the dry throat, headache and fever, there is the worst part (or at least i think so) having a blocked nose.

Trying to sleep with a blocked nose is hell. Once I finally get used to breathing through my mouth it dries out. Usually I keep the flu for about a week until i get to that extreme runny throat mucus stage where I can just spit everything out and I'm all better.

Anyone have any miracle cures for getting rid of a blocked nose when you're trying to sleep, or just getting rid of the flu quicker?

Try OTC allergy medicine like Allegra D or Claritin D. You have to do the "D" for the decongestant. Wash one down with some NyQuil. I don't know if this will work but it worth a shot.

Smoke cigars through the nose and drink lots of whiskey.

If it doesn't work... at least you should be able to record some cool vocals.

Super spicy food and hardcore decongestants. Check with your local pharmacist on what works best (every country has different drugs they sell over the counter). If you get food so spicy you can hardly handle it, enough of it will help drain your nose.

about 10 mins before you go to bed, take a cotton bud and soak it with tea tree oil. wipe in in your nostrils all round and as far up as you can go....
sneez like crazy and then enjoy breathing once more !!!

believe me, it works ..... im doing it myself at the moment...
all I have to do now is unblock my ears

I have to agree with this. I get the flu about 3 times a decade.

I am 28 yrs old, my dad is 56. I have seen him with the flu once in my life, and 2 colds..... and he refuses to ever get a flu shot... when he gets sick, it's like the talk of the family, as presidential elections occur more frequently.

I'm sure some of you on here are like that too.... the older I get, the less often I get sick.

NyQuil is the best; especially on an empty stomach so it knocks me out fast.

Re: Trying to sleep with the flu

I doubt you get the flu 3 times a year. You might get something 3 times a year but it's not influenza, so a flu shot would not help. Sounds like a good decongestant is what you need.

Re: Trying to sleep with the flu

When I was in grade school, I would get the flu probably 2-4 times a year... it depends on what you are exposed to. If you're around a LOT of people every day, you probably get exposed to more strains of disease than the CDC sees.

Re: Trying to sleep with the flu

The worsened stuffiness when sleeping is related to the poor drainage of mucous from the nasopharynx and sinuses when you are lying down flat on your back. If you can sleep in a reclining chair, or elevate the head of your bed so that your head and neck are somewhat closer to vertical it might help.

The most extreme "remedy" for this I've heard of is sleeping on a massage table type of bed, on your stomach with a cushioned opening through which you stick just your face. For obvious reasons they suggest placing a towel underneath where your face would go to catch all the "effluvia".
