weird ways of picking

do you know any guitarists that pick weird?
im just starting watching malmsteen videos again and remembered how sometimes he picks without any part of his hand resting on the guitar. I saw a guitar clinic with john petrucci and he said malmsteen was a crazy picker because he was able to do that.

Re: weird ways of picking

Marty Friedman holds his pick at a weird angle with his hand. Hard to describe but definitely weird.

Re: weird ways of picking

George Benson has a very peculiar picking style. It's easier to simply google it though then to have me explain it poorly

Marty Friedman is the weirdest of them all.

I seen thousands of guitarists but none of them picks as weird as Marty san.

Re: weird ways of picking

I went to a clinic where Marty explained his technique was so that no part of his hand touches and therefore mutes the strings he let's everything ring... Except he has such technical precision with both hands that really nothing rings you just get musical noise thrown in that adds to his sound.

The way he hold his pick with his thumb and middle finger? Or the tapping technique?

his tremolo picking gives me a headache O.o finger tapping is finger tapping... EVERYONE does it differently.

when he speed picks he curves his hand, and picks from the bottom of the strings lol

Vernon Reid, changes hand position when he picks super sonic. Watch the video for Cult of Personality.

Vernon doesn't move his wrist a whole lot, which is odd. He sort of moves from the elbow. Hell of a nice guy though

Anyway, here's a little bit on the Benson method, as written by legendary jazz player Tuck Andress:

Re: weird ways of picking

James Hetfield has talked about his own technique. Holds it with 3 fingers, like a pencil. That would drive me nuts, but I guess it helps him keep the pick more paralell to the strings.
