Well, I finally joined the 21st century...

In the midst of a *cough details removed NSFW* I finally broke my phone, and had to get a new one, so today I got a HTC smart phone since all my tech savvy friends are going that way.

Long gone it seems are the days of my old brick Ericsson and green screen.

Pretty cool, if I do say so though.

I'll miss playing snake

SWEET! Lol, If this phone was powered by tubes I would have it figured out by now.

It took me 30 minutes to figure out where the messaging menu was.

I'm on the smart phone fence. I'd like a smart phone but I don't "need" one. I also don't need the extra cost of a data package. What to do......

Yeah thats what I'm thinking. I'm already disgusted with how much it costs for basic phone, internet and cable. The new phones are nice though.

You're on at&t - if you have an iphone on contract - and you can drop your monthly data to $15 still getting 250MB of data. That is a lot of data if you are in wifi zones often. Cancel/turn off sms/text service for another sizable $ savings. FYI Verizon doesn't offer cheap data packages so their smartphone users are stuck with the $30/mo data charge.

Any phone on contract is pricey though, single-line phones especially. The smartphone only adds data and the upfront cost (of which the iPhone 4 is a priced too high on and off contract). Another thread broke this down (trying to save mobile cost for business) and unless you have a family plan and stack extra lines for $10/mo while sharing a family text plan THEY GOTCHA... glen

No kidding. They sure stuck me that alright, good thing I have ultra-fast broadband wifi here in my house to siphon from while i'm home so it won't be as bad. I will say at least my call quality improved!

Re: Well, I finally joined the 21st century...

For me it's $50 per month for a data package (thats if I don't go over the basic package useage) vs $30 for a regular cell phone. I'd be in a 3 year contract which is the only way for me to a reasonable price on a smart phone.
I have noticed that they have a $40per month deal on the Blackberry right now.
I wonder if Blackberry's are not sellnig as good lately?

I dunno. It seems to be a love hate thing. I have one friend that can't live without his and my uncle hates his to death; same as the iPhone. Something about the QWERTY pads, I suppose. My mom upgraded her super ancient Nokia too and got a QWERTY/flip style phone phone and already dislikes it lol. I don't know why that would hurt Blackberry sales though unless they haven't upgraded their functionality to match, but they've always been on top of the game, I thought. Maybe just a season incentive...Chevrolet did drop the price of entry level Camaros $4000!

Re: Well, I finally joined the 21st century...

Ouch 3 year deal? What is the cheapest smartphone monthly data package available up in Canada on a single line?

Blackberry is drying up fast everywhere but in the US some carriers try to do the $10 upcharge for BIS support which is unnecessary for consumers not connecting to BB servers. Their devices are also dirt cheap where Verizon for example would offer "free blackberry (cheapest one) to customers getting the data $$$ and $10 BIS upcharge out of the unsuspecting customer moving up to a smartphone... glen

I love Android phones and got me and the wife a Backflip last year for a penney each at Amazon Wireless. Good phones, nice features, and decent apps. Writing apps for Android is a breeze, too.
