** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY
** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home
** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping
** More Info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

Hi,

As I was looking locally here in LA for this guitar I somehow came across your Craigslist ad. I was wondering if you'd be open to shipping this item. I live in the Los Angeles area (91604 zip) and can offer you $350(shipped) for this item today. I would of course pay you upfront prior to any shipping. I can pay you via PayPal (or other means) if this offer is acceptable. If you aren't comfortable with PayPal, I'd even consider priority FeEx'ing you a certified money order in advance. I have an excellent feedback rating with PayPal and can assure you a safe and worry free transaction. Whatever, we need to do to make this happen I'm willing to do on my end.

Thanks for your consideration and looking forward to hearing back from you soon.

Keith

Hmm. When they give you their phone number it's usually not a scam. Probably just someone desperate to get a 550. I've emailed out of town craigslist trying to buy a guitar before. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with earnote... just looks like someone desperate for the guitar. he offers to pay with paypal, and he gives you his phone number.

I have also emailed from out of town before.

cheers,

thanks guys , it seemed weird. i wonder if the paypal was part of the scam and he wanted to loball me so i would go the money order route to get passed the paypal fees and the shipping cost he tried to fit in the asking price of the guitar.

The number is an unpublished land line in Burbank, CA. Call the guy and see if you get a good feeling.

I am always wary of shipping on Craigslist.

Looks legit, but I agree on calling first. The scams I always get are the ones that don't follow my post rules like putting RG in the subject header. Also be wary of the ones that ask if you'd accept moneygrams and any mention of Nigeria!

Is it possible to scam via Paypal? I mean, once you get the money, you get the money, right?

yes, you can reverse a credit card payment.
and on top of that theres no way to confirm the buyers adress (which is required for seller protection).

so yes you can scam with paypal. outside of the bay.

Re: This is what a craigs list scam looks like.

I've shipped stuff on craigslist with payments from Paypal. I always wait to ship until I've transferred the money out of my paypal and into my bank account. Always call and send a few emails as well to see what sort of vibe I get. If I'm not confident, no deal but I've done it a few times without a problem this way.

I've contacted people all of the US who have something cheap on CL. Most say they won't ship, but I've gotten a few good deals. I got my Talman TC420 from a guy in Kansas for $160 shipped in a case!
