What is "Metal"?

Just thinkin about it... what is "metal" to you guys? I consider Metallica and Iron Maiden to be more "classic hard rock" then "metal". When I think of metal, I think of children of bodom or lamb of god. things of that nature.

What does it mean to be "metal"?

I think this is a REALLY good point and something that confuses me more an more as I get older so I suppose it depends on a person's age and the passage of time.

Metallica and Iron Maiden used to be the very definition of "metal", in fact I emember Metallica being too heavy to be considered "just" metal that they had to be "thrash".

As music develops and time passes it's only logical for things to branch out and for genres such "metal" to become more diverse and some of it more extreme. I'd consider things like Lamb of God "modern metal" rather than Metallica bein "classic rock"

What I do laugh at though, are the guys who break it down so far that you have "modern, artistic, death metal" and "Melodic, black, math, metal" and then feel that they know the accurate classification of all the new bands into these different sub-sub-sub genres.

your opinion has been noted. There is no way in hell I can justify putting slipknot and iron maiden in the same grouping, sorry. Whats "hard rock" then? Whitesnake? Stuff like that? For me thats more "classic" stuff.

Re: What is "Metal"?

I remember Ozzy being asked about this, I can't remember the response word for word but it was something like:

"f'king black metal, f'king nu-metal, f'king doom metal, every time you f'king look there's some new f'king genre. What's next? F'king dishwasher metal? It's all just f'king rock and roll"

Which I think sums it up nicely.

Re: What is "Metal"?

This discussion is dumb cause a genre is not what you want/think,google metal genre and you'll learn what metal needs to be....................metal.
Oh to me this is metal and this is not = it's not you(or me) who decides what's or not metal.
It doesn't matter if you think Maiden isn't metal cause...........it is.
There are things which are part of what a genre is,they're its roots,its foundation.

Metal just like ANY OTHER GENRE is about,clothes,hairs,chord progressions,guitar tones,lyrics,attitudes etc,it's not ONLY about sounds.
Do you think if Backstreet Boys had heavy guitars they'd sound.........metal?
NOPE
Because clothes,hairs,melodies and attitudes are different.
And just like any other genre metal has several sub divisions,Maiden and Slipknot have different sound but they're part of the same genre.

Whitesnake = hair metal
Kiss = classic rock
Deep Purple = Hard rock

Rob there are 2 kinds of metal =

Classic metal

Hard metal

Re: What is "Metal"?

As simple as that:

If it makes you bang your head => METAL

If it makes you twist your bottom => ROCK

Can you justify putting Iron Maiden in the same category as Journey, Foreigner and the likes.
Iron Maiden was part of the NWOBHM

Go have a read.

And Metallica is totally out of the question. Thats just silly.
